Hello folks, hope you are all keeping well, it's been a wee while since I've posted, things have been hectic in the Phantasm household lately.

Had a great holiday in South Africa, apart from ALL of our cases going missing for 2 days on the way out (which KLM have compensated us for).
They also buggered up our connecting flight home from Amsterdam to Glasgow and have had to stump up more compensation for that (about 2/3 of our total ticket price - don't you just love European court rules  )

Have been tying up all the loose ends of my dads estate, paperwork is a pain in the neck (It's also weird that I sometimes think I have to give my dad a call, even though he passed away 4 months ago)

Picked up my new (to me) car yesterday - Mercedes C180 Kompressor SE, in iridium silver (used, but with only 20,000 miles on the clock). A bit of a difference from my old beat up Ford Focus, but if I didn't buy it now, I'd probably have waited until I retired to buy one. Couldn't believe it also cost LESS to insure than the focus.

Oh, and a belated HAPPY NEW YEAR to all on the watch. I hope 2009 turns out to be a good year for one and all. Best of luck in the year ahead.

Good to see you, Phantasm!

I've been thinking about my mom this evening. Her birthday, the first since her death last year, is coming up in a couple of weeks. She would've been 93 this year. I can't imagine it's a coincidence that the Universe has arranged for invitations for me to both a breakfast meetup that morning and a party that night. :)

Everybody send good thoughts to Batty, who's taking the GRE tomorrow. I know she's hardly here -- okay, she's *never* here -- but she needs all the help she can get! Thenk yew.

It's finally cooled down here after a heatwave for several days. My poor mum (who is in the north of the state) endured temperatures of 47c in the shade yesterday (that's 116 degrees fahrenheit...wacko!). There's been bushfires around here. My brother spent all yesterday hosing down his house to protect from ember attack and his ex-wife and kids ended up evacuated from their house but have since been allowed to return home.

SoS starts school for the first time tomorrow. Hope he goes ok. I was supposed to start work tomorrow but...well...Mr Seareach says they're hopelessly disorganized and so I haven't had any work sent home for me. Not that I care: I'll use the time to revise this lithics book...and continue to try and recover from my hangover from Friday night (drinking a 700ml of scotch in one night is not recommended!).

No, but it is an impressive feat.

Respect due for that

I may be able to get out of that problem I got in earlier this week. :cross:
And so far I am having a good weekend, but I wish laundry would do itself for once.

BLARGH.
Can he get a job waiting tables, or will he have to declare any tips? Good luck to him. . .

Best wishes to SoS on his first day of school, and to Batty on her GRE. :)

When I was waiting tables you had to declare a certain percentage of tips, which was way more than $100 a week, even working part-time.

I'm nursing a headache today, could care less about the Super Bowl and am lamenting that no one appreciates my genius.

I am annoyed. I was forced to watch the Super Bowl for a Consumer Economics class. I don't really care for American football, and I could care less about the commercials. I chose a team at random to root for so the game would be more interesting, and that team lost (although the fourth quarter was a bit more exciting than the previous three). And there were only one or two interesting commercials the whole time. I wonder if there's any way I can get my wasted time refunded?

Haha, I saw a CBC news report about the advertisers for the Super Bowl - how they are maybe not selling to the female audience as well as they should. Their dearly-paid for commercials still have that frat-boy mentality which perfectly suits the guys, but they're forgetting the gals, who apparently now make up close to 40% of the viewing audience for the Super Bowl - about 38 million. It seems female viewership for the Super Bowl has grown significantly in the past few years, for whatever reason. The CBC mentioned Dove's "campaign for real beauty" from last year as being the only Super Bowl ad that was specifically aimed at women. But Dove didn't sign on for this year, and no one took their lead.

There, put that in your economics write-up.

So...
today I'm puzzled.
We received Beorn's sophomore year PSAT scores on Friday.
They went up from his freshman year scores, which we expected as he is a year older. And last year's were pretty good, according to what Hyperception tells me colleges look for.

But all of a sudden, I am receiving recruiting emails from colleges for him. He's a sophomore, with two and a half more years to go. This is crazy!

...isn't it?

Oh no ma'am, they are right on time. Batty and Magickmaker are two years apart; Batty's college mail tapered off just as Magickmaker's geared up.

Wait, the colleges are sending e-mails now?? Eeeek! It was bad enough with all those glossy pamphlets....

Keep in mind that a big reason why the colleges inundate the kids is to encourage more kids to apply. The more applicants they have, the lower their published acceptance rate -- which helps in the college ratings game.

Why yes, it *is* a racket.

Sophomore year sounds about right for receiving college mail (never had e-mails though). That's when they started sending things to me and each of my siblings up to the current sophomore in my family. (It's sometimes hard to believe that my baby brother is already old enough to get college info mailings though--where did the time go?)
