Read Ben Bova's Titan. I've read a few of his other books and enjoyed them, but his one suffers from a lot of flaws. It's like he had a lot of the elements for a good book but just couldn't get them to gel; the sum adds up to less than its parts

Coming out of a John Crowley binge, it's time for a prolonged palate cleanse (who says there's no place for genre or escapism in literature?

Devouring A Song of Ice and Fire. Right now I'm in A Storm of Swords. I LOVE this series. In spite of overuse of certain words (i.e. whore, bastard, male anatomical part references).

Finished Listening to Mordant's Need, loved it every bit as much as TCoTC and The Gap.
Switching over to Doctor Who Audio Plays for a couple months, and then I am finally going to dive into The Pern Series. I have already bought the first two Trilogies and will be burning them to Disk over the next couple of months while I am listening to the Doctor Who Audio Plays.

I do hope you enjoy them, sin. You will be reading them in published order, and not chronological order, right?
Pern publication order
The series does show its age in some ways. It's still a terrific read.

Well, reading with my ears (I listen to Audios on my commute, as I get so little reading time, arms are getting too short as my eyes have more trouble focusing up close, and I'm a "word by word" reader, so, don't read very fast). But, yes, I will be getting/listening to them in Publication order. My mom's a big fan and has recommended them highly (As well as so many others recommending them.). I do so like dragonsMenolly wrote:sindatur wrote:...and then I am finally going to dive into The Pern Series. Yea, I think the short stories aren't available on Audio.Menolly wrote:Are the short stories available on audio as well? While not necessary to the overall story ark, I would say The Girl Who Heard Dragons should be read, if not all of them.
Also, I guess it will be a slight deviation to Publication order, as it appears Book 3 of the first Trilogy "The White Dragon" doesn't come on your Publication list until after the first two books of The Harper Hall Trilogy.
So, I am buying downlaods and burning Dragonflight/Dragonquest/The White Dragon, then the Harper Hall trilogy, and then in Publication order.
And, actually, "buying" isn't quite the right word, because I have an Audible membership (From buying Against All Things Ending) and I have been stacking up credits, and paying the monthly fees, so, I used credits to get the 6 I already got.

I've posted about this in the writer's circle, but thought I'd stick it here too where it'll be seen.
I've written a long post for my blog exploring the themes of Ursula Le Guin's Tehanu, and I'd like some feedback from a few readers before I post it publicly because I'm not sure it's structured well or makes a good argument. If anyone would like to volunteer (both who've read the Earthsea novels and who have not (and don't mind spoilers)) to read this essay/review/thing and share their thoughts, please PM me your email.

You may also wish to post about it in The Immanent Grove (the Le Guin forum) on the hangar, murrin.
...although, you could always be one of those who would listen to it all smug-like instead, knowing where things were heading.
Once they're burned, can you listen to them in the suggested order? There are things that happen in The White Dragon which may spoil the Harper Hall trilogy for you if you listen to it first.sindatur wrote:Yea, I think the short stories aren't available on Audio.Menolly wrote:Are the short stories available on audio as well? I know there are fans of the series who prefer that. But for me, it totally changes the series from fantasy to science fiction if I read it in chronological order, and it loses a lot of its magic.Avatar wrote:Personally, I think chronological order is best... *shrug*sindatur wrote:Also, I guess it will be a slight deviation to Publication order...
Also, a lot of The White Dragon is again spoiled, if one starts with Dragonsdawn. IMHO, of course.

The First Trilogy and the Harper Hill Trilogy will be all I have for now (Probably can get more, before I start, but, don't want to go too crazy getting them before I try then out). And they will be on CDs, so, yes, I can listen to what I have in any orderMenolly wrote:You may also wish to post about it in The Immanent Grove (the Le Guin forum) on the hangar, murrin.

I generally watch/listen to things in release order first time through, because any spoilers are intended and readers/watchers of the day got them that way. But, I will try your suggested order

I'm not one of those Tehanu freaks. Heh. I've read it a couple times, but not sure I remember it enough to be helpful. I'm certainly willing to try though, if you want.
I finished Julian May's Intervention. I wish I'd known of its existence before I read the Galactic Milieu Trilogy. It sure does help, even in retrospect. But I've started Jack the Bodiless again anyway even though I have a bigger To Read pile than I've ever had in my life. We'll see if I go through them all again.
