Yeah, I think I agree. I did enjoy it, though.

Finished A Canticle for Liebowitz. Not bad. A bit grim in its own way and obviously a product of the nuclear age. Quite well written and the first couple of pages are highly crafted.

It remains quite fresh and, now that I think of it, it has aged very well maybe because of its form.

Gaiman is sooooo overrated. Dozens of authors cover the same territory and do it better and smarter. [Ancient Gods and wisdom in America and a good story? Try Tom Robbins---like "jitterbug perfume" for starters.]
I preferred American Gods to Anazi Boys. But it could have been so much more. And I think my love of Neverwhere is well documented. :D

But he's rated more for his Sandman comics than his novels I think.

Invader by C.J. Cherryh. Quite good, the second in the series. I hadn't read the first but that didn't really matter as the backstory becomes obvious enough as you read.

I read FortyThousand in Ghenna before and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely check out more of her work.

I am convinced that R. Scott Bakker is a huge fan of Ambrose Bierce.

Also, I'm reading The Darkness that Comes Before.

Finished The Darkness That Comes Before. It's nice to read a modern fantasy author that does not think being reticent is being subtle (I'm looking at you, Erikson!). I've ordered the other two in the trilogy.

In the meantime, I'm reading Mr Pye by Mervyn Peake!

Have a hold on Dragonfly in Amber, book two of Gabaldon's Outlander series, at the library. It seems to be taking a while to come in, so I put holds on the first six in Pern as well. It's been awhile since I read the series from the beginning; may as well revisit.

Just finished the The Difference Engine by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. I wasn't that gone on it, maybe because I'm not much of a one for alternate history. It name-checked lots of people and seemed to be constantly hinting that there was more going on under the surface but it never really fully convinced me. Supposed to be a 'classic' though.

Finished listening to The Last Dark, waiting for the Forum to be unhidden for me.

Gonna do Doctor Who Audios for a few weeks, and then back to Pern

BAH! that book isn't a "classic." It's a passable piece by one writer who was brilliant exactly one time, but is generally meh [gibson] and another who is generally first-rate.
The sum is less than their talents...especially Sterling's talents...which makes all the difference.

ON TOPIC: I just found my copy of Huxley Crome Yellow that I had started and thought I'd lost. Gonna get back into that tonight.

Just read The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman. Pretty interesting. Their relative time as they travel to battles on distant stars is much less than where they go to and from. Earth and humanity change drastically in the centuries he's gone, but he's only about 30.
