The gray suit is the first armor Stark creates while imprisoned... he later builds the first of the classical red-and-gold suits. The director mentioned both will be in the movie.

Does the new grey suit reflect some profound change in the comic book? But hey, if it's okay with TOM, it's okay with me. (I'm not sure I will even see this movie. Depends on the reviews.)
Xar is correct, MM. The evolution of Iron man's armor is such that the original prototype was basically made of spare parts and was unadorned with any color coating.

The next example was basically the same style of armor but was entirely golden.

Eventually the armor began to take on its familar Crimson and Gold style.

I'm not looking to be spoiled too much ... but I thought Stark was paralyzed, and THEN he made his ferrous leisure suit. The picture seems to contradict that.

And that glowing chest thing. All I can think of, is that it must be some medical thing that fixes his paralysis ... which doesn't fit the story at all. But it's not just a handy worklight either. The only thing that makes sense is that it is a precursor to the chest circle we see on all the suits ... except I don't remember that it was also a flashlight.

Well there is an existing comic storyline that deals with Stark being paralyzed however I was not aware that the Movie was using that angle. The classic origin story is the scenario that Stark is inspecting some of his weapons in the field (originally Viet Nam but pick a modern hot spot, Iraq if you will) and is hit by shrapnel from a land mine. A piece lodges near his heart. He's captured, forced to make a weapon knowing that as the shrapnel moves closer to his heart he will eventually die. The armor he created was designed primarily to keep Stark's heart beating but was incorporated with protection and weapons as well. I don't know what origin angle Favreau will be using for the film.

Thanks for explaining, TOM - and thanks for the pics! I never knew Stark's suit evolved through those stages. I officially feel like a moron. :P

The more I learn about Tony Stark/Iron Man, the more I'm intrigued. No, I don't think I'll suddenly be running off to buy Iron Man issues, but this movie is looking more interesting to me by the minute. I do like both Robert Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges. And just the idea of Iron Man is fascinating - no superpowered mutant dude, but an "ordinary" guy who relies on his technical know-how and intellect (like Batman).

from what i have read, Stark (Downey jr) is captured by terrorists and told to build a weapon of mass destruction or be killed. with the materials given he builds the suit instead to use it to escape. on the acting side of things, Downey Jr is being hailed as an intelligent choice for the role because Stark has substance abuse demons of his own, and the assumption is that Downey will bring insight from his own personal experience with that to the role.

Downey is awesome regardless. I'm looking forward to this!

dlb, I got all excited when you said Iron Man fights the Eternals in that new dvd. But the blurb at amazon.com says he fights some Elementals. Did you build my hopes falsely? If so, there shall be a reckoning!

I can't find the DVD (my girls have watched it more than I have) but I think I did screw up (I looked back at my earlier post.) I honestly don't remember what they were called, but they had powers based on earth, wind, fire and water. So, I think Elementals is probably right. The sad thing is, I have no idea what Eternals are. I guess I have one angry Haruchai to deal with at E'fest?

Sad words. Sad words indeed! :( This is a very good synopsis of the Eternals:

Unfortunately, accurate though it is, decades of publication can't be put into a couple pages without losing a lot of the fun.

SuperheroHype has posted a hi-res shot of the Mark III armor, and another shot of Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (this time in a more social setting).

You guys have seen the video the spy caught of the actor wearing the armor, walking around, etc? I found a link on AintItCoolNews, but it's hosted on a comicmovie site.

Industrial Light and Magic to work on Iron Man movie.

It looks like ILM will be the principal visual effects house for the movie.

"I've always been a big fan of comics — only Marvel comics actually, strangely," grins Robert Downey Jr., explaining what motivation an Oscar-nominated actor has to join the ranks of illustrated leading men like Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman. "I always felt like Tony Stark was one of the great characters."

"From what I've seen, one of the most spectacular sequences has Iron Man flying and dog-fighting with F-22 jet fighters," Favreau beams, proud as a papa. "[He battles] the Raptors, the state-of-the-art for weapons technology."

"But sadly," Downey adds, brandishing a smile, "they're no match for the suit."
