Yeah, the costumes and buildings were great. I was worried that it looked too perfect and polished in the previews, but it wasn't. And the effects - between worlds; that bridge they always rode to get to Heimdal (not Bifrost); etc - were great.

I liked the overall story more than I expected. Wasn't sure how close they'd try to keep to the comics. Which they didn't, in some big ways. But it was done very well.

^ditto^

As I said, Thor is the one comic I followed as a kid, at least for a few years. There were bits and pieces in the movie which triggered a feeling of recognition, but overall the story was new to me. But I enjoyed it very much.

...and the eye candy for us females didn't hurt either.

wow. i watched the trailer of this movie and just said to myself that after Black Swan (which i really didn't care for) i did NOT want to look at natalie portman again for a while. and this didn't look promising as far as fun goes. so the night i was going to watch it, i watched a bruce willis movie from 2010 called Red. it was hilarious and fun.

perhaps since it got all these glowing watch reviews i may have to relent and suffer through portman again. (who i actually really liked until Black Swan - don't get me wrong, i did think she was very good in Black Swan but overall i think that film totally missed the mark)

I loved Red. "Old man my ass!"

Hopefully I'll get to see Thor while it's still in cinemas here.

She's really just a supporting character in this. She's a light weight character that won't get on your nerves. It's fun and fast.
But then again.......I love Natalie Portman.

Great popcorn flick. Action, adventure, superhero stuff, fantasy elements, humor and a little love story for the chicks. My sons and I were thoroughly entertained.

Went to see it again tonight and saw a few things I missed first time thru'.

A couple of things stood out, the first being the way the movie framing was so similar to the way the Marvel artists draw comic box scenes. The viewing angles and the use of shapes and perspectives was pretty awesome in reflecting the genre through another medium. The other thing was the 3D, which was relatively subtle compared to other gratuitous uses of it. The way it impressed was down to the way the scenes were visualised, planned and filmed, using long shots to accentuate the depth of the 3D images. Looking down streets, along rooms and ariel views knitted well with the angled shots to keep the depth there but also the interesting shapes and dimensions...

This movie was carefully planned to be filmed in a way to be enhanced by 3D not smothered with its trickery, the cinematography and visual effects were actually stunning to see second time around... Brannagh really deserves praise for this movie as a visual feast.

I've never liked the Portman all that much in anything I've seen (started with Episode I and got worse from there) so I saw that as a negative going in however for some reason she didn't annoy me in THOR. I really enjoyed the film from beginning to end and can't wait to get the blueray. I'm sort of disappointed by the box office however the film has grossed nearly 20 mil over the budget domestically and has done 250 mil foreign business so I think it qualifies as a success. However even though I didn't expect Iron man or Spider man numbers I thought It would have performed better. I hope Captain America at least matches THOR's quality and financial success.

My brother's name is Thor (I shit you not). And I still have no desire to see this film. I don't know if it's the boring trailers, or if I've just had enough of super hero movies, but I just can't muster any excitement.

The SNL rap was the best thing Portman ever did.

Hashi Lebwohl wrote:It's just business. Big-budget movies based on comic books have a built-in life span, though--an actor playing a superhero can probably only do that character for 10 or 15 years before time catches up. Spiderman with thinning hair now grey on the temples? Batman with a receding hairline?
You do know about Michael Keaton playing Batman, right?

I watched Thor with Danlo in New Mexico. Really enjoyed it, if only for Loki and the film being directed by Branagh. Didn't like Thor so much, and the story was rather simplistic. But, it was fun.

Not in any protagonist role, nor if memory serves in the support characters. Sif is played down a bit too and Balder is nowhere to be seen.
