Established religions support the status quo, new religions support the overturn of the status quo. Nothing like a little discontent to stir up religious fervor.

New religions are generally not about upheavel but combine aspects of the old religion adapted to the changing atmosphere, being primarily decided by the mode of production/reproduction of that particular culture.
