The character of Zebra in Chasm City is a transexual.

Several characters in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire are bisexual.

One major character in The Curse of Challion is homosexual (this is stated explicitly and is part of his back story).

Daniel in Queen of the Damned is gay.

Ricardo Pinto's The Stone Dance of the Chameleon series; the main character, Carnelian, is gay as well as the author. Seems it takes a gay man to write a gay man protagonist.

Anne McCaffrey has a lot of gay characters in her various series: Dragonriders of Pern for instance. Robin Hobb, too. Not a lot of straight authors seem to have any positive gay men role models (Robert Silverberg comes to mind) but there are "lesbian-ish" characters here and there. Go figure. :)

One of the main characters in China MiƩville's Iron Council is gay.

He does strike me as gay, in that pretty-boi, "Oh, poor me, this sword here at my side don't act the way is should" way.

Depends on how one interprets Elric-I never saw him as pretty--he could be said to be a super-skinny, albino, drug addict that F-ed over his entire family and kingdom (and may have been impotent), if you want to look at it that way...

Well, personally, I have to go out on a limb and say the Moorecock's most known character is gay.

Has anyone ever come across Devlin Waugh in 2000AD?

From 2000AD...."Devlin Waugh is like few other comic-book heroes. A bodybuilding, flower-arranging priest with an eye for beautiful boys and a handy way with extremely big guns, Devlin survived a steroid abuse scandal in the Olympics to become the future Vatican City-state's chief exorcist and paranormal warrior.

As Aquatraz underwater prison - home to some of the world's most vicious killers - is overrun by a vampire infestation, a loose gang of nurses, wardens and pest controllers must come together to fight this evil menace. But around the corner lies someone even more scary. Clenching a cigarette holder between perfect teeth, he purrs "You can rest easy, gentlemen. Fingers OFF the triggers. My name is Devlin Waugh. I'm here to steal the show..."

This series, originally run in The Judge Dredd Megazine, had a positive reaction like no other before or since. In the annual poll of readers' opinions, Waugh became the first and last character ever to knock Judge Dredd off the top spot as Favourite Strip.

If you've ever wondered what would happen if Oscar Wilde and the cast of Brideshead Revisited were to be merged with Deathrace 2000, The Evil Dead and the Terminator, now's your chance to find out... "

Rupert Everett would be perfect for this role in a film.

I read a fantasy series a while back where the main character was gay, it wasn't the best I've ever read ( I can't even remember the series ) but it was still interesting.

Just curious.

Take care,
Matthew
"The Wars of Vris".....the main character was gay.I read it back in the 80's. Not my all-time favorite work, and.....I don't remember the authors name.

Bakker's Prince of Nothing. It's quite an important story element, for one particular character. And it's handled in a mature, thoughtful way. It's not really featured for the sake of exploring homosexuality itself, but as merely a path studying to human behavior in general.

Jacob, feel free to revive one of the Prince of Nothing discussion threads. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I remember thinking that the book didn't really take off until the second half. I also don't remember the gay theme being explicit at all in the first 1/4. Are you making a gay joke (i.e. "lame")? Feel free to be specific.

Sespific? Nah.

Well, our prologoo hero gets raped...then later our new hero helps a boy who's a prostitute to live...then our hero, in a meeting with his masters, mentioned his lover, male name...that's as far as I got...between the gay'ness, literal, and the Christ-like imagry of Seshwana's death, I really couldn't pick it back up...still debating...was pretty interesting so far though...

Get ready for the Christ imagery to get a lot more explicit!

This is a fantasy version of the Crusades, down to specific actual historic events that happened during those wars.

I honestly don't remember the gay incidents you're talking about. The story is much, much larger than those instances. The real meat of this tale is Achamian, Cnaiur (sp?), Kellhus, Esmanet. If you haven't reached Cnaiur's sections yet, you haven't reached the real story.
