Hmm, the Somberlain has a point. I don't think Radiohead have been a 'depressing' band for a good while now. That said, The Bends is, on the whole, very much a depressing album. I just tried to find a non-depressing track on it and failed (Planet Telex and The Bends sound quite lively, but the lyrics really aren't).
I'd object to someone like Damien Rice or (God forbid) McFly covering Street Spirit, but I'm actually intrigued to hear what the Darkness have made of it. I think they could do a great cover of Creep (as the Cure already do). Don't forget that Radiohead must have approved it for some reason, it could be financial but it could be because they liked it.
They deserve a special place in Hell

The cover was a live one, so I don't think you have to have the artist's permission (could be wrong).
It doesn't really bother me that much. I just dislike the Darkness, a lot, and really adore Radiohead, a lot. But as I said, and Nav partially agreed, they're not as depressing as they're made out to be.
Okay, they're not the cheeriest band, particularly when it comes to lyrics - because often the music itself can be very happy-sounding - but the stereotypical view is that they're mopey gloom-rock whiners. Which is just not true! "Lucky" being a prime example of this.
Anyway, like I said, I'll contain my resentment and just mutter curses at Justin Hawkins. And his catsuit.

I don't think Radiohead have really been lyrically depressing since OK Computer, but they do seem to retain an certain melancholy in a lot of what they do. It always reminds me of one of my favourite bands, Saint Etienne, who make chirpy-sounding, 70s-esque electro-pop but with thought provoking and sometimes quite dark lyrics. Like Radiohead, the indie music press always seem to fall over themselves to heap praise on new Etienne releases.
I think people who really dislike the Darkness take rock music a bit too seriously. I think they're great, a lot of people try to dismiss them as derivative but they aren't. Their music is a parody of 80s hair metal rather than a reproduction. I think everyone should see the Darkness live once in their life, as their shows are fabulously over the top. I got to see them last year when my mate fixed Frankie Poullain's glasses and got free tickets. I took this picture of Justin Hawkins performing a guitar solo whilst flying round the arena on the back of a white tiger:

I'm not sure if they will enjoy the same success with their second album (in fact I'm pretty sure they won't), as I'm not sure they can really move on to something new without losing what they do so well.

Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.
