Okay. How did Intertech fund the deep space exploration that would eventually discover the Amnion?

Good question. Sorus! Let's see, did Intertech tax the mines, maybe?

Nope!
Itty-bitty clue: They invented something.

It was something not directly related to space travel. (But also something that every ship would have in their inventory.)

I'm trying to think of another clue that won't give it away.
Let's see... Intertech developed the immunity drug. This is pre-contact with the Amnion, so obviously the answer isn't directly related to that.
The answer is at least in the same neighborhood of research, however.
Also, there's a clue in my avatar if you don't mind a little wordplay.

The datacore? CMOS chip? (can't clearly remember the acronym for the chip if CMOS isn't right)

I think the chip was SoD, Silicon on Diamond, but what intertech invented...the zone implant?

Correct! In context:
Intertech's most profitable discovery, however, was the catecholamine inhibitor - popularly considered a "cataleptic," therefore called "cat" - which soon replaced most tranquilizers, 1-tryptophan derivatives, sedatives, and lithium compounds in the treatment of stress disorders, insomnia, adrenaline poisoning, and depression.
Cat alone brought in enough money to enable Intertech to expand its function into exploration.
Your turn, StevieG!

Great question and answer, Sorus and Stevie; that's how you mine the Gap for significant-yet-obscure details!

As I went through the clues, I became sure that SOD CMOS chips/datacores was the answer. But then I got to your avatar clue, and I assumed the connection was over my head.
When I read StevieG's answer, I slapped my forehead.

I figured it might be confusing because the cat in question is named after Director Donner, but hey, I didn't want to make it too easy.
