Haha, well it confused the hell out of me. Didn't enjoy it until I went back and read it after I read books 2-4. :D

Well, since you advocate reading Pern in chronological order rather than Anne's preferred order, I am not surprised to hear this. ;)

To be fair, it's only a continental war. Perhaps even just a peninsular war, depending on if a landmass as large as nothern Genabackis can still be considered a peninsula of the larger continent. :P

Thieves World, the first collection of Sanctuary stories, edited by (the now late) Robert Asprin.

Great stories, great universe.

After I finished Range of Ghosts on Tuesday, I couldn't resist moving on to the next book of the series, so I read half of Shattered Pillars on my 4 hour train ride this morning. Really excellent epic fantasy, you folks should be checking it out.

I finished Shaman, Lover, Warrior by M. Terry Green yesterday. The series is urban fantasy, but with ancient gods instead of your usual vampires and werewolves. (You can see why I was attracted to it. ;) )This one is the final book in her series, and she came up with a fitting ending.

Finished Written In My Own Heart's Blood by Gabaldon. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but was left a little dissatisfied with the ending. I'm hoping further clarification of that ending will be forthcoming in the future.

Also finished Lyon's Pride, the fourth book in McCaffrey's Tower and Hive series. I have the fifth one, Tower and Hive, on hold from the library, but it will take a few days to arrive. I'm thinking of starting the Crystal Singer series while I wait.

I feel like I've already read at least half of the new Gabaldon, given that she's been posting excerpts on Facebook for months.

Yeah, she was posting quotes as "daily lines" as she was writing it.

Yes. I realize it is normal for her to leave things hanging, but I felt some of it should have been wrapped up.

Finally getting around to finishing A Requiem for Homo Sapiens. Almost done with The Wild and will start on War in Heaven after reading Magician's Land.

Not too long ago I read Shaman by Kim Stanley Robinson. It was good, if a bit strange. Not much of a narrative structure, and really hard to call it sci-fi.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
