I have absolutely no idea [though guessing the answer could become the years new 'craze' in Mallory's ;) ]

Somehow my thick and clumsy fingers seemed to magic this up from nowhere on my 'new device' - probably in some kind of deranged sympathy with my thick and clumsy mind's spawning of random meaningless ideas from nowhere {Only kidding Guys, I love my thick and clumsy mind I assure you; It's the 'Land-Rover' of minds. It ain't subtle, but it gets the job done! Lets hope it doesn't share the vehicles propensity to 'break down' on a regular and predictable basis  }.

Meanwhile, I think a time will come in the future when our descendants will look back on us in horror for the sins we commit in the production of meat - and for the fact that we eat meat at all most likely. They will of course have the luxury of being able to enjoy the pleasures of meat [laboratory produced] in all it's varieties, without having to shoulder any of the attendant moral dilema's that we have to navigate if we decide to enjoy a rare fillet of Angus or a nut-brown capon taken, steaming from the oven.

That time is not too far off, and not for moral reasons either, but purely practical ones.

Do you refer to the practicallity of feeding a burgeoning world population in the most efficient way possible Av?

Sorry Sarge - got distracted by the 'tons question'; more earthquakes? You mean in your locallity or in the world generally. Nepal has certainly had over and above it's fair share in the last few weeks!

Yep. Space/energy required vs calories supplied or whatever. Eventually it'll be a luxury of the super wealthy only.

8O I haven't seen the film, but it looks like one that needs watching! I often get the feeling that as we approach [or passage through] mankinds next 'big shift' [for surely that is what we are on the cusp of now - and possibly the biggest one since the initial 'cognitive revolution' that bumped us up from being 'just another hominid' to being the humans that we are today], that one quote from literature will sum up our condition perhaps better than any other; It was the best of times, it was the worst of times!

My granddaughter goes off on a school 'camp' this week with her classmates, all except five whose parents could not afford the trip. How unbelievably callouse that such a situation could be acceptable to the organising body. Such educational trips should be paid for in full from the school budget for all the children in the class. Imagine the feelings of those five ten year olds this morning as their class mates all get on the coach and they are left behind! How divisive and cruel. The bastards!

I don't remember ever missing out on a school field trip. do remember getting permission slips signed.

peter : make it a triple-header. Soylent Green & the Omega Man & Planet of the Apes.

you can imagine Charlton Heston being mind-wiped after each movie and being sent again to save mankind.

Fox Hunting! Now there's an issue that divides people right across the board, irrespective of class, income or status. Cameron has said he intends to attemp a reversal of the law prohibiting the hunting of foxes by packs [not that it has been taken any notice of anyway], and legislation to this effect will be debated in the house during the course of this session. Would not this be a circumstance particularly appropriate for dedcission by national referendum. It's a relatively straightforward issue with no international implications as such, and one where the state should surely be led by the will of the people. In fact, why not go even further and let each of the Counties administative bodies arrange votes the results of which will be pertinant to their own region alone.

When in December 1958 Ian Harvey, a junior foriegn office minister was discovered in the bushes of St James Park [London] in flagrante delicto with a guardsman, Churchill's response was philosphical. "On the coldest night of the year? It makes you proud to be British!"
