Hahaha, it would be a lot less if it were just up to me. Believe me, I need no lessons. ;) The better half has other ideas though...

Anyway, last day. Last few hours in fact, since we'll probably be out by 11h00 or so. Made it. :D

No fair! *I* want a holiday break.... :( (I'm taking days here and there over the next couple of weeks, but I could use about a month off.)

The annual cookie baking machine gears up this weekend. Which I suppose I should post about in the Galley....

Me too. I will have 2 days off over the holiday period, and then the first of next year.

My wife and daughter are going to Disney World again for a few day, so I'll be on my own. That basically means the living room will be filled with musical instruments for a few days and the fridge will be well stocked with beer... :D

Sounds just about perfect, michaelm! :)

We celebrate on the solstice. So I'm taking vacation days this Friday and next Monday. Then the firm is closed Christmas, the day after Christmas, and New Year's Day. I don't see any point in being here on Friday the 2nd, so I'm taking that day off, too. Not quite as nice as having two straight weeks off, but at least it won't be the five-day grind.

Unfortunately, next weekend's Yule prep will probably be interrupted by having to help MagickMaker move her stuff out of her father's house. She's taking a room in a house that's closer to her job. In addition, the new place doesn't come furnished with her dad and his wife. So even though her rent payments will go up, it still should be a win-win....

I was chosen for a mission to China for next year. Looks like I will be traveling to China for a couple of weeks in Nov 2015 on a mission with our companies charity (OneSight - helping the world to see).

Basically we will have a traveling optical lab where we can bring people in, check their vision and for 95% of them, have them glasses prepared that they can take with them. Typically for these we see about 2000 people (most kids) per day.

My wife also works at the same company and she was chosen for the Mexico clinic in September.

Definitely a worthwhile venture, but you didn't say if you're looking forward to it or not...

Today was our last day of the Semester. And I did the worst thing I have ever done as a teacher. When the children lined up to go to Closing Chapel (chapels at our schools are more like rock concerts) one child had, unbeknownst to me, fallen asleep at her desk. She was alone in the classroom throughout the chapel until we returned to the classroom.

The kid was actually surprisingly okay with it. I think she was asleep the whole time, but I felt like I should immediately turn in my resignation, shoot myself, or be locked in an iron maiden for all eternity. After the kids had gone home, I told my principal. She was like "Oh, these things happen. Try to forget about it."

Ugh. Anyway it was a really happy day, other than that. Both my children are visiting from the States, so we have a happy houseful for Christmas. They're going to pick me up soon and we're going swimming together. :D

Your response to your small error tells me that you are exactly the kind of person I would feel happy to leave my child with and is way more significant [in a positive way] than the slip was [in a negative].

I am excited!!. However its 11 months away so it lacks the excitement you might feel if it was a month from now.

I have 11 months to learn to eat with chopsticks and to learn a few words of Chinese.

Cool! I just wasn't sure from what you wrote, although I assumed so (I would be pretty excited too as I've never been there).

You've never learned to eat with chopsticks? It's not that hard (although I have recently had to re-learn with my right hand as I still have some lack of feeling in one of my left hand fingers from a pinched nerve in my neck).

Well, the GF is flying to the coast today to spend a week visiting her grandparents, so I'm about to have a holiday within a holiday. :D

Effectively this means nobody demanding I get off the computer and come to bed because it's 2am. My only problem now is trying to remember not to starve to death because nobody is reminding me to eat... ;)

A few more stocking stuffers for my wife and I'm done with Christmas shopping. Will get them on the way back from our daughter's swimming lesson on Saturday, then I can relax a bit.

Not much time off work over the holidays for me though..

Beorn's Hanukkah and Chr-stmas presents were shipped out early this week, but they're not due to arrive until at least Tuesday. I hope they do arrive by the 24th, at least. Not only is that Chr-stmas Eve, but it is also the last day of Hanukkah this year.

Hanukkah gift giving to SD, Dam-sel, and Dam-et has been proceeding. I started with a Soda Stream, and have gotten some various Monin syrups for the other nights. However, tonight will be a gift aimed more towards the older folks, and I am thinking if Dam-et is off work tomorrow I will gift the three of them with the same gift I sent to Beorn this year.

(I have to admit, I had to put on a sever poker face when SD opened one of Dam-sel's birthday gifts to him. I dare not say more for now...)

Then it will be back to some more syrups for the rest of the holiday.

24th sounds like maybe it's great all-around then!

I'm awful about buying and mailing presents to family, myself.
I still keep telling myself I'll send this one book of photos of the earth from the ISS to my dad, even if it arrives late...
...but I haven't yet.

Naaah; you're not going to starve to death cause you're a big boy and can take care of yourself. :P

SB- sort of exciting! Do you have a particular book / program / website you're using for your language-learning?

Murrin- huh. Well, I might want to educate myself about how to recognize the flu, then! I've never actually read up on it... just thought I'd put together an idea of what the symptoms were from a variety of random conversations.

peter- maybe you can just schedule your holiday to be a week or two before cold & flu season, and that way you won't catch anything at work, so - bam! you can get the flu shot. (Yeah, right!)

deer- *hug* I would probably feel that way too about accidentally leaving a kid in the classroom. I think you and I both know reasons why it's silly to feel that way, and yet...

So yeah, I think there are sane social rules against writing a post to six different people at once.
But I was out for a couple days for various reasons, and I'm feeling super-loquacious now that I'm back?
Good excuse, right?

The expression 'young lady' here in GB amuses me. It's so...formal? Don't forget barbarian Finnish sauna culture. What's the definition of 'old' these days? Not too long ago, heard a 37-yr person describing themselves that. Should I turn old in three years when I don't even feel like it? O.o

sutton hoo was (socially) great. For the third time within a short-ish while, remained to talk to the staff after closing time and got a lift to the train station from a super-friendly worker (some may recall this happened in Albuquerque as well). Yay.
