A Gunslinger. Feel free to see Tom Petty as an icon.
I just don't agree.
And I found that song encapsulated what I don't like about him.

It's not off-topic if that is part of the reason I personally dislike the song...
You're perfectly free to say what you like about Springsteen and the others you mentioned. I happen to feel that way about Petty.

Especially that egocentric and opportunistic "We need peace in LA" song he released within about 12 hours after the Rodney King riots.
Thanks for rushing straight to the studio/Batcave and fixing that situation, Tom. Now if you could just write a song about Cold Fusion, please...
And then shut up.![]()
I'm curious. I've heard this criticism before. And there have been some others.....Springsteen's The Rising, Elton John's remake of Candle In The Wind after the Princess Di affair.......(just to mention a few). Why is it no one ever said the same thing about Neil Young and Ohio?
oooh...i'm so excited...something to moderate in Vespers!!

first of all..that was an hilarious post about Petty Trap!

secondly, i THINK, when she stuck the little off topic emo in her post, Duck was warning us that she was going to go off topic with her comment and question, not that YOU were off topic.
thirdly, i also think the reason nobody said that about Young's Ohio is because of the times, the zeitgeist of that period. it was considered a protest song. same with Nash's Chicago, which protests the trial of the Chicago 7. those two songs are in a different category entirely. don't you think?

i've had this with actors before, on the set,
where they get upset about the [size of my]
trailer, and i'm always like...take my trailer,
cause... i'm from Kentucky
and that's not what we brag about.

Trapper, I didn't intend to contradict or criticize you. It's nothing more or less than a simple curiosity point. I can't say one way or the other as I live in a radio wasteland and don't think I have ever even heard the song!

I agree with you on Springsteen. And, a couple of other songs off the album, You're Missing and Into The Fire make me want to cry.Ahem... all of the proceeds of the peace in LA song went to rebuilding the affected neighborhood(s). Petty is an ICON, man! Ranked right up there with Springsteen, et.al.
As for opportunism... anyone who knows anything about Springsteen knows that he doesn't give a crap about $$ any more. He does what he does out of artistic expression and to fufill his own moral compass. The songthe Rising is perhaps one of the great somgs about death and dying this side of "Knocking on Heave'ns door"!
And for the record, I'm not inclined to accuse any of them of being opportunistic! So, peace, rock-on and Duck out!

Other than "West End Girls" I never cared for them, though their cover of "Go West" was hysterical.
"Saturday in the Park" by Chicago. Oh man that song sucks.

A Gunslinger did have a good point that I hadn't previously appreciated about Petty's charitable intentions. And I didn't mean to criticize you either onewyteduck.
It's ALL good...
