Broken them with my Noble Scythian Horse Archers (and a couple other units). Admittedly, it takes two units of archers to decimate their ranks at long range, and then a heavy infantry unit to charge in and cut them up once they're weakened. (If you can charge a heavy cavalry unit into them from the rear once the infantry engages from the front or flank, it helps a lot too. ;) )

My Spartans broke quickly in my battle last night, which was uncharacteristic of them. Then I realized, I hadn't bought them any experience! I guess that has an effect on how long before they break, aye?

yeah, experience increases every attribute, including morale.

in multiplayer and custom battles you pay for it when building your army.

You earn it in the campaign

I never completed a campaign. I always got bored when it became obvious I was inevitably going to conquer the world.

I finally started playing again. It was getting difficult holding on to all my territories (35, I think), and I lost one to rebels yesterday, but also gained a new one. I'm working on a new strategy. On one front I have a diplomat bribing every army he sees, on the other a small army running round capturing rebel cities in the far east. Going to surround the Brutii and wipe them out.

Do you have the 1.2 patch?
What is your graphics card?
Do you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10?

First of all, Rome doesn't work very well with WMP10 - something to do with the newer codecs. Made mine crash quite a lot. Try rolling it back to WMP9 if you can.

I downloaded the Rome Total Realism mod and it made it amazingly difficult, I can barely survive, let alone conquer anybody playing as the Thracians.

thinking of getting it, is it hard to install?

it was very easy to install, so simple I don't even remember what I had to do to install it. It was probably just a simple "run the setup file and you're done" job.
