Eh. Good enough.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Ok, our local station decided it would be cool to start their news early...

Last thing I saw was
Spoiler
Jack laying in the jungle with the dog next to him. He looked up and saw a plane fly over.
Did anything happen after that?

'Bout time. I'm glad I'm not an obsessive geek-fan counting the stuff they didn't cover, cause I really enjoyed it.

That was flipping beautiful. And I'm glad it ended the way I've been saying for several seasons now...
Spoiler
Like the first moment, but in reverse - with Jack's eyes closing forever.
I'll discuss more later, but right now I'm still taking it in.

Big question now - why did Juliet say to Miles that "it worked"?

Had some time to think about this now... and the more I think about it, the more I am not happy with the way it turned out.

Way back when this show started, one of the theories going around
Spoiler
was that they were all dead.
Didn't one of the creators come out and say flat out that this wasn't the case?

So we get to the finale last night and guess what?
Spoiler
They're all dead?!?
For me, the finale was excellent, up until the last 15 minutes. I really thought they were heading to a point where everyone moved to the alternate timeline, with the memories of the island and all that happened being brought over. And that Jack (or Hurley) would stay behind in the old timeline to keep the smoke monster trapped there. I could have lived with that.

But to go through all that crap, with Desmond moving the rock, and
Spoiler
Jack killing Locke
and then putting the rock back... and then oh by the way,
Spoiler
you're all dead.
Bah!

I've loved this show since the beginning and this is about the worst possible ending in my opinion. Sure, it was well done and it was nice seeing all the characters reconnect - especially Sawyer/Juliet, but to throw 6 years of an excellent show away by
Spoiler
having them all be dead...
that was too much.

At first I tried to rationalize it in my mind that maybe they had only died at the end of last season, when the bomb went off. But listening to reviews/recaps of the show, it seems like
Spoiler
they were dead all along.
They might as well have shown an autistic kid shaking a snow globe at the end if that's the case. Because that's about how I feel.

Hmmm...I sorta liked the reconnecting of everyone...sorta didn't like the almost complete lack of "mystery" answers.

But, I think you're wrong, Aka:
Spoiler
they were not all dead all along
I haven't seen any of the recaps/reviews, but I don't see it that way...that would just be an aweful ending.
Now I'm gonna have to go look.
Sig-man, Libtard, Stupid piece of shit. change your text color to brown. Mr. Reliable, bullshit-slinging liarFucker-user.
the difference between evidence and sources: whether they come from the horse's mouth or a horse's ass.

the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.

I kept in your spoiler tag, because it's misleading to anyone coming here without seeing the finale, but does anyone really need them anymore? If you didn't see it last night, you will soon and probably won't come to this spoiler-ful thread.

I'm not sure how to say this without seeming rude ... but you missed the point of the flash sideways. Okay, IMO.

There was no alternate timeline. The structure of the place was created so they could find each other once they were dead. But the island story was reality, and while some of them had died, not all of them were, yet.

I'm not sure how much I like having so much of season 6 spent on a scenario that meant so little to the island story, but it did pay off at the end.

Hurley (to Ben): you were a good second.

Ben: you were a great first.

That exchange tells us that the sideways was out of time, that Hurley and Ben lived on and did their job on the island for some time before they died, which we won't see.

Juliet said, "It worked." because she was so close to death and could not tell the difference between that place and reality.

But the twist that I didn't see coming was Desmond "turning off the power," and making the struggle between Jack and Locke mano-a-mano.

I was surprised when Jack stepped up to take on Jacob's task. I figured it would be Hurley.
I wasn't surprised, but for a second I thought it might be Hurley. I knew it couldn't be Sawyer or Kate, but Hurley's connection to Jacob and his growing role this season seemed to be preparing us for something. I think his "glad it wasn't me" comment was a nod to the audience that the writers knew we might suspect him.
Well, the finale puts that comment in a new light, eh? :D I guess it wasn't so outlandish to expect Hurley after all.

I'm with Akasri. I liked the character connections, but I did not like the way this ended at all. I don't care if they were all dead at the end of season 5, or from the beginning, or whatever ... all of season 6 sucked. The sideways flashes were an incredible waste of time, and a big lie to the audience. And the island stuff was extremely anticlimactic.

The island actually has a cork?!? It's not merely metaphorical, but a giant cork that Hume can pull out? And why was Hume needed? Seems like Jack could have done it, since he put it back.

Why did MiB turn into a smoke monster when he went down the hole, but Jack and Hume did not?

Everybody smiling and hugging in a church is most definitely not what I expected.

Haven't read the new posts, I still have to watch the last half, but, man, what a tear jerker so far. I was always put off a bit by all the Soap Opera content of the coupling on this show (Though I always loved Jin and Sun as a couple, and always rooted for Danielle and Ben to eventually get together). Despite this, many of the "coupling" scenes really brought out the emotion in me.

I really enjoyed last nights finale episode. The island action kept me riveted. And the "sideways" reunions had me all choked up. (I think half the point of the ep was just to let all the characters come on stage, bow, and reminisce with us.)

It wasn't until it was all done that I realized that they did not answer ANYTHING.

Did no one guess that the flash-sideways were the afterlife? No? You know why? Because they told us they were "flash sideways"!!!!! They did everything to make us believe in an alternate timeline, and then at the end --- it wasn't. They lied. That made me a little mad.

Hurley became #1 as expected. Ben: I suspected he might even end up being #1, but I guess #2 is still pretty good, so I am happy about that. But what does it mean when he doesn't want to move on, he has some things he wants to do? Is he going to hang around in limbo for a while, by himself. Maybe he has to wrestle with his daemons a while more... I'm not sure what the meaning of Ben's last scene is at all.

I imagine that he either still needs forgiveness from Alex, or he wants to help her move on as well, or both.

If the majority of the people died at the end of season 5, in the bomb blast, then I can buy into that. I don't really want to think that all 6 seasons took place after they had died. That feels really cheap to me.

The alternate timeline being the afterlife... well, whatever. It's more like the alternate timeline was purgatory though. Because once they accepted and understood everything, and had reunited, then they could "move on" to the afterlife.

ItisWritten: what makes you think the Ben/Hurley thing is out of time? I'm not following what you're saying here I guess. Hurley was with the others at the church and Ben was sitting outside. I understand that the alternate timeline/purgatory/whatever it was could be outside of normal time, but what made you think that? I totally did not understand that exchange between Ben and Hurley on the island.

And of course, if they actually died at the end of season 5, then what was Jacob before that? They had interacted with him in various ways throughout the show, but we never actually saw him until the end of season 5... lots of unanswered questions. I was hoping for a better resolution, but it is what it is.

The alternate timeline/purgatory is a place they get to whenever they die. Some died long after Jack died on the island. But whenever they die, they all get to this timeless place together. I think that was the point of Christian's explanation.

About the unanswered questions ... I can live with some. Heck, even big questions like "what's the island?" But some questions are integral to the characters. Juliette's entire reason for being in the show rests on the fact that women who get pregnant on the island die. Why? This wasn't always the case. It was a fairly recent development. No explanation.

What about Aaron and Walt? What was so special about them? What was so crucial about Claire taking flight 815 (according to the psychic)? Again, those are questions that go directly to character. We don't even see Walt or Michael at the end. They are completely ignored.

I liked the feeling of this ending, but I can't simply turn my brain off and ignore how it didn't make sense.

God, I hope the Chronicles don't end like this.

BITE YOUR TONGUE!!

Jeez, I hope SRD doesn't read this and say "hey, that's a great idea..."

I understand the Ben/Hurley exchange now - once I think of the fact that who knows how many years passed between the island and them showing up in the afterlife.

it seems the people at the church were the most important people to Jack.

some people's greatest moments didn't happen on the island. Walt being among them.

some like Michael are stuck on the island. i would suppose that Hurley helped those people move on from the island.

I imagine Ben is staying to help ALex and Danielle move on.

i like the fact it was left open ended enough for us to fill in the blanks how ever we feel best.

I'm waiting for the Top 10 List of Unanswered Lost Questions to show up somewhere.

And the Top 1000, for that matter.

Hurley's and Ben's final exchange, I believe, lets us know that after Jack died, the island was saved, and everything was [relatively] fine for the Island's protectors, and they lived happily ever after, until the end of their days.
sgt.null wrote:Charlie = Gilligan

It's more like:

Jacob = Creator (visits you, then brings you to island)
Man in Black = Lord Foul (brother and enemy, trapped in Arch)
Island = Arch of Time (time travel, Man in Black's prison)
Smoke Monster = Worm of the World's End (don't rouse it!)
The Source = Wild Magic (inexplicable power, the keystone of the Island)
Jack = Covenant (unbeliever turned savior, went back a second time and died there)
Sayid, Clair = Ravers (possessed by Evil)
Kate = Linden (we hate her, saves everyone at the end)
Dharma Initiative = the Old Lords (exploring the Earthpower)
The Others = The Clave (unknowingly served the Man in Black)
etc.
etc.
