Julie's mm had to be moved to a nursing home. so we are visiting each day her sister is out of town.
hot water heater not working. going to try a new heating element before we put in a new heater.
Julie is less that a year from retiring from her job of the last 20 years.
our neighbors left during the hurricane. left their cat that we have to feed now.

Yes, Av. Monday.
Damn thing happens every week.
Sorry to hear about your difficulties, Null. I hope it all works out for the best and asap.
Tomorrow is Halloween and its actually not steaming hot outside for a change. The kids won't be sweating off their makeup which is cool.

Yay, a day off for Sorus!
(not rescinded!)
Does this mean that you managed to catch up with that mythical creature known as a 3-day weekend, too? *hopeful*
Yay, Halloween...
but I have some tutoring this evening (d'oh!) so I'm a little nervous about incorporating that into the schedule, not to mention helping the kids finish costumes.

"People without hope not only don't write novels, but what is more to the point, they don't read them.
They don't take long looks at anything, because they lack the courage.
The way to despair is to refuse to have any kind of experience, and the novel, of course, is a way to have experience."
-Flannery O'Connor
"In spite of much that militates against quietness there are people who still read books. They are the people who keep me going."

The 3-day weekend remains a myth, as I had to work yesterday and will have to work the rest of the week. Have been told that I can have New Year's Day off, which makes for a 3-day weekend, as well as an unsubtle hint that I shouldn't ask for anything else this year.

It sounds like you work as a Clark for the financial firm of Scrooge and Marley, Sorus. Perhaps looking for another position might be a good thing.
Goodbye Halloween 2017.
Now on to Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's.

I am having a good day.
It's a bit chilly and rainy... but I'm surprisingly awake for having missed some sleep last night.
Guess it's like "I'm getting a few things done... though nothing spectacular, and dreaming of other things I may do."
As my beautifully-illustrated Children's Nursery Rhymes book puts it:
Please to remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Sorus- actually, we all know that you are stuck in your job, because someone there is blackmailing you to stay in your present role.
Alas, they know you implemented a scorpion pit in a bathroom, replacing the only toilet with said pit at a small preschool, back when you were a building contractor.
Oh, wait... this isn't Corrupt-a-Wish, is it?
This is the "how are you today?" thread - my bad.

You're right! So true, even though... I kinda like bonfires.Avatar wrote:You missed out Guy Fawkes there.

It's not exactly blackmail - they're not threatening to reveal anything scandalous or anything like that. They'd just make my life a living hell - well, they already do, but in my current position, I am able to maintain minimal interaction, whereas if I took a promotion, I would actually have to work with the little... princess. And by work, I mean I'd end up doing more of her job. The salary increase would not be equal to the stress level increase. Scorpion pit is still viable, however.
Note to self: Buy molasses.
Not really celebrated by most people here. Can't even get bonfire toffee around here. Last time I tried to make my own it turned into a miniature reenactment of Pompeii. My counter was about 3 inches deep in toffee.Avatar wrote:You missed out Guy Fawkes there.![]()

Friday, hooray. How can every day drag so slowly, but the week be over so fast? This is truly a mystery of life.
People celebrate Guy Fawkes here. And when I say celebrate, I mean let off fireworks. I doubt 1 in 100 know who Guy Fawkes was, and even fewer what he was trying to achieve.
Ah well, at least it will rain. It always rains on Guy Fawkes.

Yeah, that's probably the most common connection people make these days, at least in the US. I have several family members who spent at least part of their childhoods in the UK - I won't say I ever truly celebrated Guy Fawkes Day when I was a kid, but I was aware of it. I may even have had the same book that Linna had. And there used to be an awesome British candy store downtown, and they'd always have bonfire toffee at this time of year, so I started that as a tradition, because traditions built around gratuitous candy can't be bad - but the store closed a few years back, and I've been unable to find another place that carries it, which leaves making it myself, with all the associated disasters. And I forgot to buy molasses.aTOMiC wrote:Whenever I see the name Guy Fawkes the first thing that comes to mind is the film V for Vendetta.

Nice.
I put in for my leave yesterday, so looking forward to a decent holiday. Will be off from the 12th Dec until the 2nd Jan.
Just have to make it 'til then. And of course, it's the time of year clients panic because they haven't done anything for months and now suddenly want their stuff completed by the end of the year.
