You know those one or two notes that turn a good song into a classic?

Like the first guitar notes coming in over the bells on AC/DC's 'Hell's Bells'.

Or a bit more obscure, the intro to 'Glastonbury Re-visited' by Cosmic Rough Riders - not the first guitar notes, but when they all come together on about 15 seconds.

The one I can't get enough of at the moment is in The Sugarcubes 'Delicious Demon' - just before the Choruses.

Actually, I can see a place for this thread distinct from the solo thread. The first guitar notes in Hell's Bells certain aren't part of a solo. Yet, they are goosebump inducing. I like moments like that in a song, heralds of things to come. Setting the mood, building the tension. Subtle beginnings.

Also, I love little breaks or pauses where a band catches its collective breath before plunging into the climactic crescendo. My current fav example of this is Tool's Vicarious, in the last few minutes where Maynard says:

"The universe is hostile
so impersonal
Devour to survive . . . so it is, so
it's always been."

And then all hell breaks loose. God . . . chills! I love it.

And "Everlong" by Foo Fighters. **** I lurv what they did with their original concept on that song. Sounds great soft. Sounds better hard. Sounds even better soft 2nd time around.

There are so many other moments. That's just what came to me when I saw this thread.

I don't disagree with "Hell's Bells", or Tool in general.

This is an embarrassing question, but how would we go about posting little bits from songs we like? I'm embarrassed because I should know this. But I've never once even ripped (or burned) a CD. I've never downloaded even one song. I don't own an MP3 player, and still listen to music the "old fashion" way: on my stereo.

I ask this because it would be cool if we could actually post little bits (10 seconds or so) of music we really like--just stuff we KNOW would blow someone away to hear. That way, we could hear what other Watchers are listening to, instead of just talking about it. Anybody interested in something like that?

Hm. I don't know how to post a piece of a song, but I know how to rip and posts songs from cds. When you enter a cd into your drive, you should get a menu asking whether you want to listen to the cd, rip it, etc. Once all the songs have you been imported onto your drive, you can use a website like yousendit.com or megaupload.com to post stuff. (It's really easy to rip cds with iTunes.) I dunno, I know how to do it myself I guess I'm just crappy at explaining it.

Yeah, I was kind of teasing about my ignorance. I kind of figured you that to rip from a CD in Media Player, you just hit the "rip" button at the top. I've been experimenting, and I can't figure out how to cut the file down to one 10 second slice. I'll keep looking, and check out the websites you've mentioned.

[Edit: okay, I've briefly checked out those two sites, and it seems they are for sending files via email. Do they support a feature similar to Photobucket where you can use it to post here?

I use CDEX to rip mp3's, and it has the option of ripping partial songs. You can get a free version off download.com. As for posting them, I don't know how to do that.

Not just for email. After uploading the mp3, they'll give you a URL that you could post in a thread if you wanted to.

It's not ideal, but if you go to www.youtube.com they have loads and loads of music videos on there, including very very obscure stuff. If you can find the band on there you can cut and paste the address of the video onto your post.

Doesn't answer the question about just the good bits, but better than nothing.
