Free first-person shooters

Post by Worm of Despite »

These stand-alone games are fully featured, professional quality, and (best of all) completely FREE. Check out at least one! There's quite a few, but these are my personal picks:

Tremulous - Features team-based action and RTS elements. Has a sci-fi "humans versus aliens" theme, with various upgrades for humans and classes for the aliens. Draws inspiration from a Quake 2 mod called Gloom and the Half-Life mod Natural Selection. Based on the Quake III engine. Very high quality mod, recently released (March 2006).

Enemy Territory - Between 5,000 to 10,000 people playing it at any given time, and for good reason. Features team-based play, objectives, and runs off the Return to Castle Wolfenstein engine, which still looks very good. Originally planned as a commercial add-on, but can now be downloaded for free. A 2007 sequel, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is on the way.

Alien Arena 2007 - Offers Quake III/Unreal Tournament-style deathmatch. Has an active community, tons of maps, and runs on the Quake II engine.
