Yes, I will actually be going to the first chamber music concert of my life this weekend.
Cuarteto Latinoamericano
Manuel Barrueco, guitar

Sunday, November 19, 4 pm
Rackham Auditorium

The beauty and unbridled passion of Spanish and Latin American music come together in this dynamic pairing of Cuban guitarist Manuel Barrueco and the Mexican string quartet Cuarteto Latinoamericano. Full of fire and finesse, the brilliant foursome joins Barrueco — renowned for his seductive musicality and uncommon lyrical gifts — for an impassioned program that showcases works for solo guitar, compositions for string quartet, and the combination of the two, including the area première of a UMS Co-Commission by U-M composer Michael Daugherty.

Program
· Carlos Guastavino : Las Presencias, No. 6 (“Jeromita Linares”) (1961)
· Javier Alvarez : Metro Chabacano
· Michael Daugherty : Bay of Pigs (2005) (UMS Co-Commission)
· Agustín Barrios : La Catedral
· Roberto Sierra : Tríptico
· Astor Piazzolla : Tango Sensations
· Piazzolla : Milonga del Angel
· Piazzolla : Muerte del Angel
I have never heard of any of these guys performing, but I do love Hispanic guitar music, so I thought I would give this a try. :)
Love as thou wilt.

I've never heard anything played by what would likely be called a guitar quintet, but I'll bet it's awesome!! Should be a great concert!!!

Barrueco is as good as they come. There was a Lexus commercial several years ago with him playing in the back seat, demonstrating how quiet the ride is. He was playing Track #4 of the listening samples on this:

All lies and jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

Well, the one guy plays hispanic guitar, but the quartet from Mexico looks like a standard string quartet? :?

There are chamber quartets made up of guitarists, though. I was really tempted last year when one came through on tour. I think they were named something like the Los Angeles Gautar Quartet or something like that. :?

I hope this post makes some sort of sense. I just got out of my nice warm soft bed to chase my son and his best friend (who is here for the weekend) to bed since it is nearly 2AM. :Z: :Z: :Z: :Z: :Z:
