Not a fan of power ballads. That said, both Poison's "Every Rose Has It's Thorn" and Def Leppard's "Love Bites" are outstanding songs.

ERHIT is such a simple song, both lyrically and musically, but it speaks so plainly about the end of a relationship. It's beautiful in it's simplicity, and arguably one of the best songs of the '80s.

"Love Bites" is a different breed entirely. It's about the beginning of a relationship, and lyrically it's also simple. The music is breathtaking. Between Mutt Lange's production and the band's virtuosity, the music just leaps out.

It amazes me that none of the new breed of country singers have covered either song, as I believe both would lend themselves to it well.

Agreed, and I'll just leave it at that.

Does "Cat's in the Cradle" by Ugly Kid Joe count as a power ballad?

 Always reminds me of a government advertisement that used to be on in Northern Ireland - this one was on during Mr Bean......! Believe me, you have NEVER seen an ad like this one!

Um, I think maybe the only 2 or 3 good ones have already been mentioned. I guess there may be some crap by Heart that's ok, or Leta Ford. I need to see that commercial for "Power Ballads of the 80's!" to remember any others.

Who? That song as written and peformed by the one and only Harry Chapin. Along with Taxi, Sequel, and The Point.

As far as power ballads go, Paul likes Silent Lucidity by Queensryche.

And, if it is considered one, I'll go with Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.

Ugly Kid Joe did a cover of Cats In The Cradle. A poor one, IMO.

Johnny Cash does a very good version of "Cat's in the Cradle."

As for power ballads in general, not a fan.

Power Ballads......
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

I'm not sure I consider it a power ballad, but since it's on Power Ballads II, I suppose it must be.

Just a little trivia about "Every Rose has it's Thorn." Did you guys know that Bret Michaels wrote that because his girlfriend cheated on him with one of the guys from Quiet Riot? Every since I heard that I have to laugh out loud when ERHIT comes on....especially the overdone melodramatic sigh that lead in the song.... Gross. Why on earth would you cheat on the prettiest boy of glam rock with one of the ewky guys from QR? Just doesn't make sense.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Ok, I just remembered the greatest power ballad ever, and it's pretty recent: Holding My Own by The Darkness. Here's a snippet:
Baby, everything has fallen into place
My life is so exciting now I've got my space
Like a splash of water on my face
Lately I'm doing what I can do to pleasure me
I'm finding time to focus on my fantasies
I'm satisfied in my own company

I don't need your permission
To take this matter in my own two hands

'Cos I'm holding my own
Give or take a tear or two
I'm holding my own
No matter what I put myself through

I had to go to amazon.com to look up what songs actually rate as power ballads (I tryed to ignore most music in the '80s). I did enjoy: House Of Pain - Faster Pussycat, however...and Zebra's Who's Behind the Door? (if that counts).

Power ballads make me kinda ill, but I do have a guilty pleasure... "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones.

I wouldn't call "Who's Behind the Door?" a power ballad (but I'm biased, Zebra rocks).
