Music That You Obsess Over

Are there any bands or artists that you feel so strongly about that it makes you a dork? Bands or artists that you would share with (or force on) the world if you could? Do you ever wonder how it is that everyone does not know and like this music? Tell us about your musical obsessions, and tell us about some of the reasons you feel this way, personal experiences etc.

I like Bob Mould and Husker Du (She Floated Away is a great song), but my big three are: Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Chris Whitley. With Steve Earle and Warren Zevon coming in next. I met bot Earle and Zevon.

Petty and Springsteen are both imprtant to me in thatI grew up on them, and bothg reach me in a musical and lyrical sense. They have provided the soundtrack of my life, so to speak.

I like me some Muddy Waters, and Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson anyone? For several years I was VERY obsessed with certain blues artists. Powerful, simple music with feeling.

As for Panic. I was hooked the first time I saw them at 19, I had no idea that a band could play like that. They just blew me away, I also liked that fact that they were just some fugly guys who got up there and kicked ass in the same clothes that they would wear to Wal Mart.

I dig Morrissey too but I can't be too happy when I listen to particular songs. I was extremely happy the other day and then Half A Person came on; I said to myself-gosh I usually love this song but it's sooo depressing!

As it is known, I am one of those Rush fans.

No one is really anti-Rush (such a thing is incomprehensible), they just haven't heard the right song or album yet. We're gonna find that song or album if we have to go through the entire library to find it. Everyone is a Rush fan, even if they don't know it. Even if they vehemently deny it. You will listen to Rush. You will like Rush.

Admittedly I haven't had a great deal of success, though an old coworker did once catch me listening to Vapor Trails, and realized after a couple of moments, "This is Rush!" Shocked. "But... it's good."

In general I have rather obscure taste in music, and am convinced that a lot of the bands/artists I like (examples: The Deep Fix, Kendra Smith, CXS, Robert Calvert, Great Big Sea, Lake of Tears, Blind Guardian) should be a lot more popular than they are. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with trying to make them mainstream, but if you hang out with me for any length of time I'll probably try to force at least a couple of them on you.

In response to Sorus about Rush, I have never said I hated the band, and I don't. I simply don't "get" their music. I completely agree that I probably just haven't heard the right song or right album to draw me into the band. Unfortunately, the one album of theirs I did buy years ago on faith to listen to left me shaking my head in disappointment.

I do hold out hope that I just haven't discovered the "real" Rush yet.

So then, Sorus, I appeal to your inner Rushness to answer me this: what is the band's masterpiece? What is the one Rush album I absolutely, positively must listen to before I die?

Meanwhile...music that I obssess over? First on my list would be Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies. Ever since coming across them 20 years ago (and wow, it's been exactly 20 years!), his 9 symphonies have been constant musical companions. I continue to be amazed by them. It still boggles my mind that one man could dream up such a multi-faceted body of music.

Next on the list...maybe Gustav Mahler's symphonies, for my neurotic side.

Then there's the music of the Police. My favorite rock band.

I also obssess over Big Country and Simple Minds, two very different but equally superb bands hailing from Scotland that achieved limited success here in North America. It's sad that they haven't been appreciated by more people, but their songs will always be at my side.

I was one of those huge Rush fans up to somewhere around Signals. I don't listen to them much anymore, but I'd say 2112 is one of those albums that you simply must own.

Moving Pictures is Rush at the height of their careers; it's their pinnacle both musically and commercially. What's amazing to me, although I am a huge fan, is that I like several other albums just as much, including their latest real album, Vapor Trails. Still, Rush isn't for everybody; if you just don't like them, so be it. Chris Whitley, on the other hand.........heh, I'm not gonna say it, because Luci'd just edit my post anyway!
