I think it is just an animated gif. There is probably some software that converts MPEG or AVI into GIF. I suspect it would not be free.

Crap. Okay the orginal question is now expanded.

You can find a free animated gif maker in google. But I doubt you'll find one that can convert movies.

I can convert .avi's into .gifs. The shorter the better though basically. Mail a short .avi to me at the addy in my profile and I'll mail you back a .gif.

BTW, Avatar, what are you using to convert?

I was using an old version of Animation Shop, by the same guys who do Paintshop Pro. But it turns out that it's now too old to deal with the new compression. But the graphic design department here has Adobe Premiere. I'll give that a shot today.
