Simpler Way To Counter Global Warming Explained: Lock Up Carbon In Soil And Use Bioenergy Exhaust Gases For Energy
Writing in the journal Nature, a Cornell biogeochemist describes an economical and efficient way to help offset global warming: Pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere by charring, or partially burning, trees, grasses or crop residues without the use of oxygen.

When bioenergy is produced by pyrolysis (low-temperature burning without oxygen), it produces biochar, which has twice as much carbon in its residue than that from other sources. This makes bioenergy carbon-negative and improves soil health.

Wayfriend, did you read the article? It didn't mention burning down the rainforest.

I find this "thinking outside the box" approach to be refreshing. It certainly sounds promising for economic, technological, and environmental reasons. If anything, it shows that it is possible to both use fossil fuels and offset their harmful effects at the same time. Since it is a fact that we will be using fossil fuels for many decades to come, I think these kinds of strategies make the most sense. We should still develop alternatives to fossil fuels, but while we use them we should also try to absorb the CO2 we're emmitting.

Biomass is a renewable resource. Using this resource in a way that doesn't increase CO2 emmissions is a real step forward. It deserves a little more than one-line ridicule.

The Air Car

How does it work?

90m3 of compressed air is stored in fibre tanks. The expansion of this air pushes the pistons and creates movement. The atmospheric temperature is used to re-heat the engine and increase the road coverage. The air conditioning system makes use of the expelled cold air. Due to the absence of combustion and the fact there is no pollution, the oil change is only necessary every 31.000 miles.

At the moment, four models have been made: a car, a taxi (5 passengers), a Pick-Up truck and a van. The final selling price will be approximately 5.500 pounds.

And what's a fiber tank?

Otherwise it sounds good!
Anyone else think that the real breakthrough or high volume production of alternative cars like this is going to happen in India or China?

I'm thinking them first because the total government control on the economy will make it happen rather than our own hands off approach.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other either.
But look at China.
They want to build the worlds largest dam, they change whatever it takes to build it.

One facility in Utashinai, Japan, has been doing just that since 2003, using plasma—an electrically induced stream of hot, charged particles—to process up to 220 tons of municipal solid waste a day. Now a bigger and better $425 million plant is scheduled for completion by 2009 in Saint Lucie County, Florida. The operator, Atlanta-based Geoplasma, expects it to generate 160 megawatts of electricity—enough to power 36,000 homes—from a daily diet of trash.

My guess is that it has everything to do with our increasingly litigious culture, which is woefully intolerant of the trial-and-error nature of anything related to invention and innovation. What happens to those fuel vaporizers in a crash? What is the increased potential of fire and explosion? How do you maintain government-mandated fuel system integrity with a bolted-on fuel vaporizing device? Is there any increase in ambient gasoline vapor emissions with the vaporizers? Who gets sued if a vaporizer fails and someone is injured or killed, or if a state or federal agency determines that ambient emissions from the devices violate clean-air standards? Who carries the legal and financial weight?

Apparently Mr. Rowley's system only produced those results in steady cruising. Most everyone drives in the real world with cities, stoplights, and traffic, where I'd suspect that his system wouldn't benefit mileage too terribly much. Be nice to have for my yearly drive to Florida though.
