Most of them are unfamiliar, but the ones I do know (and my opinions on them):
Iron Butterfly = good
Beach Boys = meh
The various Elvises = meh (they're alright, but not among his best)
Beatles = NO! No no no. I dislike the Beatles, and this is one of their most irritating songs.
Eddie Cochran = nah, it's nothing special
Connie Francis = hell no! Horrendous song.
Sex Pistols = no. Nothing by the Sex Pistols ever needs to be heard.

At first I thought this was from the Stephen King, not some random guy
Except for a few, they're all the same 50's style... which generally doesn't do much for me. Talk about music that doesn't have anything more to say!
And how did InaGaddaDaVida get on this list?

I was rather......disappointed by the list.
The bright spot is The Hollies "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress", which is simply a great, timeless song.

it IS stephen king, relayer. (check first paragraph of column where he talks about "constant reader")
and it's a bizarre list alright, but not so bizarre given his age and that it's stephen king. heh.
i was just happy to see the most undermentioned Rocker of all time on there, EDDIE COCHRAN.

Sadly, I've heard most of them. Not that they're bad songs, but none of them would make my top 24 (though Tall Cool Woman would come close). His selections from Elvis Costello, the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen aren't even in my top 24 for those artists. And I don't care how catchy it is, any song that's on the 'Eddie & the Cruisers' soundtrack deserves to burn in hell. I wonder if that's not just his bands' set list......dlbpharmd wrote:Sadly, I've never heard many of these songs.

I was thinking the opposite; good soundtrack, pathetic movie. I guess being a musician makes it hard to watch a movie that so obviously got it wrong on so many levels.....

Didn't like the movie or the soundtrack. Yet another one of those things I don't get.

Yeah, I never listened to regular radio much back then, but they definitely played the hell out of that song.

I have an appreciation for the Beatles, but I'm not a fan either.
Why? Lots 'o crappy lyrics (mostly Paul's), lots of songs that sound the same, and mostly they're just not my style.
That said, there are a couple of songs that are great (like Blackbird), and they were absolute pioneers in the recording studio.

Ok, I don't want to turn this into a Beatles thread . . . .but "lots of songs that sound the same?" I don't think there's another rock group in history that has a more diverse range of music as the Beatles' catalogue. Maybe Zeppelin (talk about lots of songs sounding the same
). But did Zep ever have oboe music? French horns? Beatles go from bubble-gum 60's pop to psychedelic acid rock to Indian to country to ballads to blues to . . . you name it. They were the first rock band. They were pioneers in more than just the recording studio. I had assumed that everyone here had heard much of their prodigious collection of music (since so much of it was hits), but now I'm starting to wonder just how much Beatles you guys have actually heard!
But if it's not your style, it's not your style. Fair enough.
Ok, rant over.

Yeah, I respect the Beatles and happily give due credit for their achievements, but the songs just grate, for me. It's as superficial (and inescapably fundamental) as that.Cail wrote:I have an appreciation for the Beatles, but I'm not a fan either.
In most for-against Beatles discussions, Imagine comes up sooner or later as an example of Lennon's brilliant song writing, so I'm going to pre-empt that possibility by saying if I could punch John Lennon, I would. He deserves a smack in the mouth for the high irritation factor of that song. Or would, if he wasn't dead. (I could make a tasteless quip here about the motive of his killer, but I'm not feeling malicious enough today.)
