Another Author Goof in FR? [SPOILERS]

Post by Aranion »

I'm still reading the book - apparently I'm aping SRD's reading pace :D - but just read the part where the Theomach teaches Berek (and Linden) the Seven Words (thus ending the mystery of just what is the seventh Word!). Linden thinks to herself that Covenant never mentioned the Seven Words.

While this may technically be true, he sure as heck used them in front of her. In TWL, as the group wends its way through the Lower Land, TC brandishes the krill and uses the Words against the Lurker.

Looks like I'll be sending this one off to the GI.....

Romeo said that SRD was aware of this. I think this one is easily explained by the circumstances; yes, Covenant uses the words against the Lurker, but that's the only time that Linden has been exposed to them, and she didn't ask for any kind of explanation. She could have easily forgotten about that instance.

Just like we in RL dont retain everything, I guess we cant suppose that the characters in TC do either.

I am beginning to think that some people retain more about what happens in these books than they do about their own lives! 8O

hehe, well, covenant using the words of power in twl really made an impact on me because it was one of the only bits of kevin's lore that survived between the chrons (obviously only because TC brought them) and it was cool that they still worked.

There's another potential discrepancy I noted as well, but this one may due to point of view. Someone (Esmer or the Harrow) tells Linden that the Elohim do not want the White Gold and never did, but that contradicts the fact that Chant tried to talk TC out of the Ring in TOT, that Findail told Linden and TC that he was hoping they would wise up and let him have the Ring, and at the end he tried very hard to get it.
As I said this could just be a point of view issue where the speaker did not know what he was talking about.

My memory may be playing me false, but I remember the words of power from the First Chronicles as

Melankurion abatha! Duroc minas mill khabaal!

So now 'Harad' has slipped in there as well?

Am I right or is my memory incorrect?

Nope, you're right, that's the Seventh Word.
Choiceless, you were given the power of choice. I elected you for the Land but did not compel you to serve my purpose in the Land... Only thus could I preserve the integrity of my creation.

I'd thought of that. I don't have my copy of TWL in front of me, but I seem to remember that the Lurker broke Linden's leg badly in the Sarangrave and while she may have heard the words, she may have been distracted.

To expand on this a bit - in LFB, the Lords only knew 5 words:
Melenkurion abatha! Minas mill khabaal!
"Duroc" must've been in the Second Ward, because it first appeared in TIW.

I can't help but wonder why Kevin kept the Words secret, or otherwise spread the Words throughout the Wards. It seems that if the Seven Words were the key to invoking Earthpower, then the New Lords would've needed to know them upfront in the First Ward.

I'd have to do a re-read of the Sarangrave passages of TWL, but I suppose it's not a huge stretch to say Linden wasn't really cognizant of what Covenant did to drive back the Lurker, due to injury and recovery. But I find it very hard to believe that during their time with the Giants that she did not hear the story or talk about it with Covenant.

Oh well.

Nice to know all seven words. So when the Theomach teaches Berek and Linden the 7. I believe (or so to me) that this is one of the most powerful segments in this book. (if not the entire chronicles) It explains alot in those pages and where the words origin began, where they came from and the meaning of the words.

Very much of a closure of a part of the history of the Land.

She didn't. There is no other mention of the Words of Power in the 2nd Chronicles.

Did you just say, "Source of enduring earthen earthpower, I invoke thee to protect against despair and swear only munificence towards creation?"

No way...he was just sneezing!
Heh...heh...heh!
Brian: Who cured you?
Ex-Leper: Jesus did, sir. I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! "You're cured, mate." Bloody do-gooder.
Brian: Well, why don't you go and tell him you want to be a leper again?
Ex-Leper: Uh, I could do that sir, yeah. Yeah, I could do that I suppose. What I was thinking was I was going to ask him if he could make me a bit lame in one leg during the middle of the week. You know, something beggable, but not leprosy, which is a pain in the @$$ to be blunt and excuse my French, sir.

When Covenant used the Words of Power against the lurker of the Sarangrave in TWL, he:

"...in the silence of his clogged lungs, Covenant raged words he did not understand. Words of power..."

It is likely that Linden didn't HEAR Covenant say anything since the lurker was choking the life out of the questers at the time he "said" them.

I do believe that this "discrepancy" is not a gaffe by SRD.

Yeah, I'll buy that MrKABC. Besides, from what some other folks have been posting, SRD has much more serious discrepancies to resolve than this.

So we started with five words, but they were called seven. Then we had six words, which were also called seven. And now we finally have seven words. Linden lived for ten years (sorry, I forget how many exactly) between book six and book seven, so if YOU can remember some really odd words for that long and then recall them exactly from one hearing after that length of time, mo power to you. I know I couldn't do that. But she does seem to remember other stuff inhumanly well. What do I know?
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?
