That's right, Fist, it looks like the Watchmen movie has finally left development hell. I saw this reported in last month's British mag EMPIRE but was just too lazy to post about it here.
If I was excited and nervous about V For Vendetta, then I'm doubly so over Watchmen. I think you know how I feel about Watchmen and V For Vendetta. They rule. Period.
I wish Zack Snyder well. I didn't much care for his previous opus 300, but maybe that was the stepping stone, the practice he needed in order to tackle Watchmen. According to the EMPIRE article I read, Snyder does seem to be a fan of Watchmen, rather than just a hot director who got snagged to helm another "comic book" movie.

I agree, the history of the group is vital to what makes Watchmen so interesting.sgt.null wrote:I hope they keep with the story line. i wouldn't mind cutting the pirate storyline. but i want to see the history of the group.
Agree about the pirate storyline, too. It added to the reading experience, but it might make for a very confusing movie.

Yeah, I agree on both counts, too. And I fear it will become a present-day-only story. The history will likely be very brief flashbacks. The journal entries and stuff at the ends of each issue will probably not happen at all.
But I can always hope, eh?

Aaaaaahhhhhhhh...... The Watchmen!!! Arguably the best comic book ever. I'll certainly not argue against it, although maybe two or three things are tied for first with it. It's a 12-part maxi-series, which is available in a single trade paperback. (I just bought it for a certain someone for Christmas. Ho ho ho!)
It's intensely complex. In the present, there's the main plot itself; the side stories of the different characters; the pirate comic story-within-the-story. In the past, there's the flashbacks to their early days, as well as remarkable writings like diary entries that give insight into individual characters. All combines for an experience unlike anything else in comics. That part isn't as arguable as whether or not it's the best thing of all. It is unique.
These aren't characters you've ever heard of. It was made by DC Comics (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Specter, Dr. Fate...), but it's an entirely self-contained story. Dr. Manhattan is pretty much capable of anything he thinks of, but, because of his power and perceptions, his thoughts are not quite like ours. The rest of the characters are non-powered folks. Geniuses and/or incredible athletes, all with their own perspectives on everything. My favorite character is Rorschach. His story is brutal and insightful.

Well, if I were to call Watchmen the greatest comic book ever, that might just hint at how much I revere this work.

Indeed, to say Watchmen is a "mere" comic book is akin to calling TCTC a "mere" fantasy story. Watchmen arouses in me the same passion that TCTC does, and that's saying something. They are both works that take their respective genres and seriously shake them up while maintaining their classic forms. A guy with a magical ring. A group of costumed heroes. Standard stuff remade into something new. Oy, it's intensely complex all right, as Fist says. And Fist is so right about Rorschach: he is a pariah, one whose view of humanity is cold and extreme, yet also profound, just as his own story is brutal but deeply moving. SRD mentions how he gives his characters "dignity" by telling their full stories, and that too is what Alan Moore does for Rorschach and the other characters in Watchmen. It's about putting people in a "moral arena" to see how they cope, just as SRD likes to do.
See, I could blather on like this all night long...but I better give it a rest and have some dinner.
