Overrated. I played the game and it was good but not the bst shooter I played like many people claim it to be. Give me UT(Gears of War would not exist without the UT Engine) and Quake.

Uhh...well, a lot of things wouldn't exist without Pong, but that's really beside the point. It's a unique IP, and not really a true FPS. I found it refreshing.

Give me Doom or Doom 2 over Quake any day. Never played UT and have never had any desire to. Lots of people like different things. I like Gears of War, but I never said you had to.

Unreal and Gears are both made by Epic games, I see the games as Epic's two ideas of where shooters should go in the future. I actually wouldn't like to tie the Unreal games directly to the engine anymore, it seems to me like Epic now seek to make the best engine possible (a huge amount of their income comes from licensing the technology to other companies) and the games are somewhat secondary to that.

I've always seen Unreal as very much a hardcore online gamer's game, whereas Gears is more accessible, story-driven and popularist. Both games are showcases for what developers can do with Epic's latest technology.

I do think Gears is a truly great game. It offers a genuinely new take on the genre, has a very rich setting (although I hope they'll flesh out Sera's history some more) and is incredibly immersive for a 3rd person game. I don't think I'd ever call it the best shooter ever though, as I was never really struck on the multiplayer. It felt like there should be more players on the map and snipers were too powerful, plus I could only ever get cheap chainsaw and 'nade tag kills.

The best shooter ever, for me, would have to have excellent campaign and multiplayer modes. Call of Duty 4 would win my vote hands down, if not for the fact that, for all it's glory, I don't find the multiplayer to be much fun. I still think you have to go a long way to beat Goldeneye 64/Perfect Dark for getting both sides spot on. My favourite of the current gen has been Halo 3, but I can't in good conscience consider it the best shooter ever as it has some clear flaws, even if they don't particularly detract from the experience.

Gears of War was built by the UT Engine. The best shooter of all time.... I don't really know... COD4 is don't think it is. Half-Life(two as well) for story, impact and making you want to play on and on. Halo was alright but I prefer Quake and UT for the massive multiplayer expirenece.
