IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE VOCALIST...

Post by aTOMiC »

Bands that you'd like if there wasn't something about the vocalist that drives you nuts.

Mine are...

The Cranberries (oowah oowah oowah oowah drives me straight up the wall like fingernails on a chalkboard)
The Cure (super great music tailor made for me but off key vocals make my skin crawl)
Sammy Hagar Van Halen (Sure do love the Dave songs but...)
Evanescence (there is only so much forlorn wailing I can take. Since every song is like that I really have no use for the band)
Daniel Amos/Swirling Eddies (once again, love the music can't stand the vocals)
Clear Frontier (When the girl is singing it's okay but that guy...Yeesh! Don't get me started...)

Bob Dylan (love his music performed by others)
Neil Young (ditto)
The Cars (except for Drive)
Kiss (except for Beth)
etc...

And I like the lyrics to many of the new metal, but I can not stand the growling and screaming that passes for "singing."

Awe, man, I love that dude. Funniest-sounding voice ever (except for maybe Dylan when he sings in his Kermit the Frog voice).

I know is sacrelidge around these part...but I prefer Sammy's sings MUCH more than Dave's singing in Van Halen.

Dream Theater...the singing isn't on par with the rest of the music.

99% of why I don't like heavy metal is the vocals. Death metal is at 100%, and rising, if that's possible. Speed metal, well, that's just silly. Sounds like Alvin & the Chipmunks doing regular metal, whis is, as I've already mentioned, not all that interesting. I will not pay $16 to listen to somebody scream at me; if I wanted to listen to people scream at me, I'd just move back in with my parents.

Bands like Boston and Queen, who change out singers that really defined the band with somebody who just doesn't have the chops almost always lose me completely. I think I'd rather they just changed the name of the band if they're not using the original singer. Of course, sometimes the replacement singer is as good, or better than the original, like with Genesis, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac, or the Scorpions. Then it's a good thing.

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion
a fate I don't deserve.

It took me a long time to learn to tolerate Axl Rose's voice, and it's still my least favourite feature of that band.

remember the Gin Blossoms? The music was good, the lyrics were good, but the whiny off-key singing made me turn the station.

High on Fire
Muse (though sometimes I can tolerate it)
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I can't stand Ocasek.
But, it could be his delivery as well as tone.
I'm willing to give you a listen with an open mind.

I appreciate being given a fair shake. Frankly I don't think I sound all that much like Ric I just think people try to place a familiar label on things and that's generally the closest thing they can come up with. I'm okay with it because I am a fan of Ocasek and the Cars and it's generally meant as a compliment. :D

I'd agree with what a couple of others have mentioned as far as Bob Dylan goes. Generally great songs, but I can't listen to them unless someone else is performing them.

That brings to mind a funny clip I heard a few years back from an interview with Dylan, though. The interviewer asked him how he would respond to all of those critics who complained that he couldn't sing. He replied, in his drawl "You know, if you listen to all those records, I actually do hit all those notes..."

Albums youve bought for one specific song, and then discovered that it was the only song on the album that you liked.
