Bands you feel you should like but don't

Post by Cagliostro »

This came up in the Talking Heads thread. Not so much that you dislike them, but just that you can't get into them and you feel you should have.

Talking Heads
Pixies
Liz Phair (I even bought two of her albums, liked one song of both).
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
Floggy Molly
Dropkick Murphys (both this and the above I have tried to like because I love the Pogues so much, but just utterly fail to connect with any songs)
Nirvana
Green Day

You might be suffering from the malady my wife calls VO, victim of overplay. She starts out liking a band, then once she's heard their chart-topping single 6 billion times, she's done with them - apart from simple song fatigue, it has to do with cache. She enjoys 'discovering' new bands she likes, but apparently loses interest if too many people start to agree with her. :)

I'll admit I do have that problem at times, but if they were worth it, I'll always come back to them. Nah, these are folks I never got into in the first place, but have always been told by those who I share musical tastes with, "Oh, you'd like them. And lordy knows I like them." Yet I can never get into them.

I guess for me that would be The Ramones.
I was always told, "Oh, you really like The Kinks? Then you'll like The Ramones."

...I still think the people who told me that need their musical taste evaluated...

The Beatles. Influential, legendary, etc - but just don't do anything for me.

Yup. Add Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, and Nirvana for me.

I used to be big into The Rolling Stones, The Doors and Hendrix, but I can go for very long stretches without missing them. I liked a few Nirvana songs, however, when I hear them now on alt-rock stations I go, "Why are they playing this stuff?" which is weird as alt-rock wouldn't be where it is without Nirvana... :screwy:

Bruce Springsteen just doesn't do much for me.

There's another one. There's a couple of his songs that are absolutely great, but for the most part he's mediocre (at best).

Couldn't agree more.

Now, like Dylan, I enjoy some of his songs when performed by others who can deliver them.

Agreed, and agree also about Springsteen and Dylan, and I'll throw in Aerosmith.

Aerosmith definitely. All post-Kill 'em All Metallica. 90% of The Who. Pearl Jam.

Springteen was fantastic until after The River...then he lost me. Older balladeer vs. young man with songwriting talent, I guess...

Yeah, I can echo that and Cail's point about Pearl Jam. In fact, I can't stand anything from the grunge period of the 90s. Good rock n' roll died with the advent of Nirvana.

Most of the ones I thought of have already been mentioned, but

Pearl Jam
Dave Matthews
Bob Dylan

but I'd add Grateful Dead to the list. Just never "did it" for me.

The Stones and U2 actually make me switch radio channels if I hear them. (Apart from Paint it Black)

U2 is a band I really want to like, since their early stuff was so good, but I just can't stand 99% of what they did after War.

Sure I'd like to like the following....but I don't.

Like the Police - Sting not so much
Like U2 through Joshua Tree after that not so much
Not a fan of:
The Who
The Stones
Springsteen
Dylan
Aerosmith except for Toys in the Attic...the song.
GnR except Sweet Child O Mine
I like some slide guitar masters (Rod Price - Foghat etc.) but not a fan of most everything else. Sounds like a slightly off key dying cat to me. Can't explain that.

There's more. :-)
