Artist rendering of Nom?

Post by Rocksister »

Has anyone out there tried to draw Nom? The description is pretty decent in the book, but I'm not artist. I'd love to see someone pretty talented come up with something and post it here. Nom is one of the most interesting cameo characters in the Chrons to me. The scene where he lowers his head to TC's feet is awesome (in the dungeon in Brathairealm). His "rending" of the Raver is awesome (in Revelstone with Honninscrave). His channel-digging to divert water from Glimmermere to quench the Banefire is awesome. I just think he deserves some artistic effort. Anyone up to it?

:D

I will try to come up with something satisfactory. I think i can do a decent job of it if i can turn the legs around to make it run like an ostrich...at least the backward bent knees part of it. and those scenes have come to mind for me as well.... i mentioned trying to do a scene where nom is breaking through the dungeon doors showing him hammering the doors downward and then standing in the light coming through the doorway.the fight...tc clenching him with White fire and then Nom Bowing and possibly the Haruchai battling him outside the sandwall.. If i can get Nom Right.. he will be a muscular and manish in shape but with an Ostritches backward bent legs and wide pad shaped feet, blunt forearms and a head with no eyes slits for a nose and a slit for a mouth...with gill like slits on the side of its neck or ears..if it has any..have to check the description.

what was i thinking....no nose no mouth

oh..and i put a new pic of the coast of Seareach in the Album..its a little dark though....the future stuff wont be so dark.

The fight with the Haruchai would be awesome!

Yes, Hig is right. No features on the face, only slits on the side, and ridges under the skin in the forehead area, I think I read. No hands, arms end in battering rams. Feet are wide pads, backbent legs like a bird. I don't remember anything about hair or color of skin. I believe all this is in The One Tree, in the Brathairealm chapters. I'm so looking forward to seeing what you come up with Blackhawk. Your work so far is outstanding. Love your avatar, and I know you did that, too.

:D Yes, a very good start! Yeah, definitely the feet.

Personally, I'd bulk him up a bit, too. No, it wasn't necessarily his physical size that was so stunning (It hardly had size enough to contain so much might.), but still... But that's just me. You're the artist here.

I really like what you've done, Blackhawk. :)

For some reason though, I picture his arms being a lot larger. When I first read the description of Nom, I was reminded of a monster from one of the Silent Hill games:

Obviously, the body is wrong and the arms are too big, but still...

I always thought that the Sandgorgons were like vicious little boils with battering rams for arms but I also think that if any of us can render a cool version of one, it'll be Blackhawk :)

Thx Vain :)

and thx everyone.

:D I thickened Nom up and his Arms are longer and thicker, I didnt want to make his arms too thick at the end because they need to be able to pick up/handle stone fragments small enough for Honninscraves Grave, the legs thicker and the feet dont have that flat human foot appearance.. they look more like a small snow shoe mixed with a T Rex foot. still crude but better than the original. I will post a different pose to show the changes.

I didnt change his overall appearance that much, I was trying to give him the appearance of great speed & power without making him look like something the Haruchai could just run circles around forever.

heres a description i was going by from the White gold wielder:
Albino against the desiccated waste, the beast approached
at a startling pace. Its size was not commensurate with its
might: it was only a few hands taller than Covenant, only a
little more thickly built than the Haruchai; yet given time and
concentrated attention and freedom it was capable of reducing
the entire gutrock wedge of Revelstone to wreckage- It had a
strange gait, suited to deserts: its knees were back-bent like
a bird's to utilize the full thrust of the wide pads of its feet.
Lacking hands, its arms were formed like battering rams.

Thanks Rocksister.. I probably would have put this off for along time if you hadnt posted this. and it was something i really wanted to do..but wasnt sure how to start. and now that i started this it gave me ideas for urviles Marid and possibly even Cavewights...

I had the impression that Nom sort of looked like the creature from Alien (without the tail & mouth parts!) and bulkier arms & legs....

yep...Nom would make acid paste out of an alien. the alien would come running at him and use that extendible jaw...and it would break off on Noms Head.

strangley enough since i enlarged everything i needed to make Noms head a little bigger...so i enlongated it just a tiny bit and it does look a little like the alien from the side view.

now when i look at the first version i made he looks skinny, the latest version is an improvement i think,I will post today. he will be more Albino also.

I wasn't able to use your link, Blackhawk. I got this message "not authorised." Yes, with an "s" instead of a "z". I'm going to follow the path to it and see if I can view it. You are talented and seem to have a passion for art. I feel some major stuff coming on from you. Waymeets, Andelain, Colossus, Caer Caveral (cooler cuz he has no eyes), nicor (oh, yea, that's a GOOD one), Pitchwife (one of my fave characters). So much to choose from!!!!!!!!

if you were trying to access my personal Gallery I dont think Vain has any of that active..everytime i try to click on someones personal gallery it says the same..not authorised. everything i post now is going directly to the Laborium in the Album section of the Discussion area. I havent even posted any of this on my webpage yet....

Thankyou :D and agree about the endless possibilities....i was going to try holding off on things outside the land but now i have a sandhold for Nom to tare down. now i need to get back to Seareach i have some cliff carving to do before i show close ups...it looks good but i still need the cliff dwellings and a couple extra walkways. not to mention the half done revelstone and sarangrave/landsdrop. 8)

Blackhawk, I am reading WGW and going by your rendering of Santonin, I wanted to ask, what scene in the book, or maybe a previous book, did you pull his physical description from? I know you aren't using that avatar any more, but didn't you give him green eyes? I just passed the part where Gibbon took on Honninscrave in the Hall of Gifts and it was said twice that Gibbon had red eyes. I assume the reason for that was his connection to the Banefire and a "human" life spent serving in the Clave. But I don't recall anything about Santonin. Wasn't he the one who greeted Covenant at the gates of Revelstone covered in wasps? I only remember he was bald with just a few wispy hairs. Funny how I can only recall a few things, but not others. Once again, your abilities amaze me. I have not even attempted to do anything artistic on the PC. I have nothing but Paint and Picture Manager for existing photos, and really don't have the passion that you do. But your enjoyment of it is giving happiness to those of us who don't share it. I applaud you, dude.

:D thanks again, Im really glad some of you enjoy it, one of the main reasons I am working on this series is that these books were the first actual Novels I read in my life so they do hold a special place, and the other reason is because when i looked for artwork related to the TC series an unbelievably small amount of artwork is out there that i have been able to find...outside Kevinswatch i have found maybe 2-3 pieces and i have been searching now and then for years. i did a couple pieces and then i put it off for a few years, then i wanted to make a map of the land. I used the antgear/Kevinswatch versions for a couple years as a desktop and i thought about how to make a new map probably for a year before i started it, i tried a couple years ago 05-06 and was put off by my attempt, and picked it back up early in 2007. Now  here in 2008 im almost done.

yep.... I think that Gibbon had to be the first person with red eyes in the land outside a cavewight, no matter what the reason my first thought would be. RAVER!!!! unless gibbon was ablino like NOM :D

I'm not sure but the guy with wispy hair and wasps on him was just another Rider I think, Santonin didnt survive TCs first visit to the Keep...Santonins eyes should actually be very dark brown almost black in my vision but they turned out tan or ocher in the test i did :), the green is just a reflection of the Illearth stone hes holding.

the descriptions i mostly went by a few things mentioned in TWL and I sort of took liberties with the rest..

The fertile sun vivified his stark red robe, etched
the outlines of his black rukh (which i need to make), made the stiff thrust of his beard look like a grave digger's
spade.

and this

When he looked about him, bodies lay everywhere. Only one Rider was left standing. The man's hood
had been blown back, revealing contorted features and frantic eyes.
Intuitively, Covenant guessed that this was Santonin.
In his hands, he grasped a flake of stone which steamed like green ice, held it so that it pressed
against his rukh (I dont have a Rukh made yet). Pure emerald virulence raged outward.
The Illearth Stone.
Covenant had no limits, no control. A rave of force hurled Santonin against the far wall, scorched
his raiment to ashes, blackened his bones. (this is another scene im working on) so far I only have Santonin though :?
