Bees! Really big Bees! I mean Triassic-class Bees!

My daughter told me that she saw, with a slight look of horror on her face, that there was a HUGE a bee in my bedroom window last night as she was getting ready for bed.
So I go up there thinking she was exaggerating.
She wasn't!!!
It was the size of my arm!
Ok, it wasn't that big but it was literally the full size of my thumb.
It was making me sick just looking at it.
It was clearly what I envisioned covering the Raver in front of Revelstone.
I managed to trap it between the window panes and went down stairs and asked my wife to call the person she was on the phone with back because she had to see this monster.
There was no doubt in my mind that if it had stung one of us we would have swelled up and been dead until morning*.
(*obscure Bill Cosby reference)
Anyway, my wife spared it's life and managed to open the screen and let it free, it probably killed a dog or a cow later that night I bet.

She did some checking on what it could be and found this:
Nobody knows for sure.
I do know that if the bees become allies with sharks that we may be on the verge of losing the Great Shark War.

Was it a yellow jacket like in the link you posted?

I once freaked out by the giant bee I saw in my window. It was black and hairy and had a yellow spot on it's back. I thought it was a black widow bee. And it was ... yes, as big as my thumb.

(P.S. I'm in Massachusetts, too.)

I think what I saw was a "carpenter bee". Or maybe not.

My Dad has these huge bees that look like they could be the WWF steroid infused yellow jackets of the species. I think he said they were accidentally brought over from Europe. Ugh Huge.

Although I have never seen an Asian hornet there is quite a population of European hornets in my area.

It was most likely a European hornet.

That European hornet is the one my Dad's got. They like a specific tree that grows on his farm and when they are perched on the bark they are incredibly docile but man are they HUGE. His place in in Virginia.

We have wood bees all over the place here in Indiana, and they grow pretty big.

My grandparents porch was once taken over by a giant hornets nest - and when I say giant, I mean the nest had been built up to the size of a 24-pack cooler. I've never seen that many hornets, and hope to never do so again.

That was my first thought actually since there's lots of carpenter ants and dead wood around.
