Fantasy films.

Can anyone name 10 fantasy films? Its tough. The utter lack of quality fantasy films is disturbing. I can name a few. In no particular order I might add. I did not consider animated cartoons or out right garbage. (Dungeons and Dragons)
1. LOTR – A shinning example of the best the genre has to offer even though the final film has yet to open.
2. Legend – Tim Curry’s performance and costume is amazing.
3. Willow – I wanted to like this film more than I actually did, but I do own it on vhs and pull it out every so often. Actually pretty cool.
4. Army of Darkess – Holy cow! I think I laughed straight through the first time I watched this. Terrible special effects but who cares.
5. Harry Potter – Hmmm…
6. Dragonheart – Thoroughly enjoyed it.
7. Dragonslayer – Impressive special effects for the time.
8. Excalibur – One of my favorite films fantasy or otherwise.
9. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – Tim, the Enchanter!
10. Merlin – Made for tv but Sam Neil is great!

Very cool list Danlo. I lumped all of LOTR together. Some of the films you mention I haven't seen or haven't seen in years. Brotherhood and Laydyhawke respectively. I do think the success of LOTR will blow open the possiblity for other true fantasy films of a high quality. I did notice that Harry Potter was missing in your list. :-)

Sylvanus, in regard to AOD you took the phrase right out of my mouth. Hah! Danlo, I noticed Kull on your list. I collected the marvel comic for years. I bought the Kull dvd. I being a fan of the character I wanted to like that film a lot. I just didn't. Kevin Sorbo just isn't Kull to me. Its a good film otherwise. Its like when the american Godzilla came out a while back. It was a decent film but it wasn't Godzilla.

Yes I agree Sorbo wasn't dark enuff 4 me--I loved the books--that's why the ----------is over them: view at your own risk! I'm not pluged in2 the Potter thing whatsoever.... 8) Prince Valiant is surprisingly good, 4 what it is...

I tend to think of the Matrix movies as fantasy, and they're waaaaaay up on my list!!

American Werewolf in London
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Debby Does Dallas (you have your fantasies, I have mine)
Highlander (Original. Endgame was lots of fun too)
LOTR (both, and all 3 soon!!)
Matrix (ditto)
Princess Bride
Raiders (1st & 3rd. 2nd SUCKED)
Star Wars (the group)

Best Fantasy Films

My list, in no particular order...

--LOTR (kinda a given, really)
--Legend (the director's cut, which is much better)
--Dragonslayer (dated, but its quality is still excellent)
--Ghostbusters
--The Fifth Element (not really that good, butohsofun)
--Jacob's Ladder
--Neverwhere (okay, its a miniseries but still...)
--Prophecy (Christopher Walken and Eric Stoltz as angels)
--Devils Advocate (Al Pacino as SATAN?!?!?)
--The Seventh Sign (a very interesting tale about Judgement Day)

What's this!?!? The Neverwhere? Neil Gaimen's Neverwhere!?

Okay, in no particular order, except for Jackson's LOTR, here goes:

-LOTR (The pinnacle of all fantasy movies :D )
-Ladyhawke
-Legend
-Labyrinth (I think this was one of those things where I was exactly the right age the first time I saw it to fall in love with it for life.)
-Willow
-Krull
-Brotherhood of the Wolf
-Dragonslayer
-Troll
-Prince Valient
-The Conan Movies
-The Neverending Story (Only the first one of course. When they introduced a six foot talking bird in the second one, I literally cried.)
-Bakshi's LOTR movies
-Bakshi's The Hobbit
-Wizards
-Clash of the Titans
-Spirited Away
-Harry Potter (all)
-Ever After
-Heavy Metal
-What Dreams May Come (does that count?)
-The Crow
-Red Sonja
-The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
-Time Bandits
-The Last Unicorn
-All those '70's low budget myth movies (ie Jason and the Argonauts)

Many of these movies, while not exactly great cinematic achievements, are movies I saw when I was just a wee tyke, that helped to cement a lifelong love of fantasy, and for that they're great in my book. And I know I'm forgetting so many more.... ;)

Yeah, it was written as a miniseries, then a novel. Just came out recently on DVD in a two-disc set. :D

Damm I missed Prophecy (which I sort of put in another category with Stigmata, Devil's Advocate and Angelheart--religion based horror/fantasy)!
I'm kicking myself for Highlander! (being 2/3 Scotch! Hoot Mon!!)
And I should have put Donnie Darko in psychological fantasy too...

YEA some1 else likes Prince Valiant!! 2 cool! 8)
