I actually thought the diner scene in pulp fiction was supposed to be spoofy. A good diner one is Reservoir Dogs where the diner they plan the crime in is actually owned by one of the guys planning it.
In #2, at least in the Chinese versions, Yan's been a criminal for about 10 years so he's not exactly "new." Plus he's got a family connection with the triads somehow. Don't remember if it's the same for The Departed. However, Infernal Affairs also pumps up the "conversation with your major enemy" up to ridiculous levels so that they meet in stores, and the police chief and the crime boss are old friends.

Cool criminal genius Hans Gruber wants to commit a robbery. He comes up with a simple plan that involves committing several dozen counts of kidnapping, several acts of murder, firing missiles at police cars and blowing up an entire skyscraper.
His idea was to disguise his robbery as an act of international terrorism. Think about that; in order to pull off a job that would normally draw the attention of the FBI and maybe InterPol, he disguises it as something sure to bring the entire force of the US military down on him and his entire home country.
Great.
Cracked sucks.
Now I'm going to think of this every time I watch Die Hard!
