How long do you keep your Christmas decorations up?

Post by aTOMiC »

My family and I love putting up Christmas lights.
Unfortunately it is a very unhappy task to take them down. :-(
We hang on to the holiday feeling through New Years Day and then down they come.
This year since Thursday is New Years Day it looks like I'll have my decorations up as late as the morning of the 3rd.
I personally think that's a little too long but I'm waiting until Saturday to do the job.
I wonder how long others keep their decorations up. Is December 26th the last day? January 1st? February 1st? July 4th?

As I haven't put in decorations up for the past few years, I don't remember anymore. But typically it depends on the laziness. It seems like after the new year hits, it's time, but sometimes procrastination lasts longer.

This coming year, I swear to buy a tree and put the decorations up, dammit. We'll have a <1 year old, after all.

Usually the weekend after New Year's for me, but we took them down early this year (a few days ago) because we are redecorating the house for our new arrival in February and I needed to get them out of the way.

Well that's in in a nutshell for me. I have all the energy in the world while decorating after Thanksgiving but when the time comes to ascend the ladder to pack everything back in the boxes...I have a tad less enthusiasm.
Last year I wanted the neighbors to think we had taken everything down so after work one day I hurriedly ripped down all the stuff from the outside of the house and threw it in a pile in the garage. It was some weeks after that that we finally found the strength to begin taking down the tree and such.

When we decorate for when father-of-love visits, I do it the way my Roman Catholic neighbors of my childhood did it. After all, I wasn't raised with the tradition of decorating for Chr-stmas...

We buy a live tree the week before Chr-stmas, set it up, and allow it to open for three or four days. We start decorating, but do not turn on the lights until Chr-stmas Eve. Then all decorations remain out until January 7th, once Epiphany/Three King's Day has passed.

When we lived in south Florida, we would start putting the decorations away after we returned from the Three King's Parade in Little Havana...

What? Heck!, at my age ,when i get my Christmas Decoration up, I'm telling everybody! Why ,people from all around come to see my Christmas Decoration. Ever since the mail man, John, passed away, for 5 years straight now, my Christmas Decoration has been voted best on the block, thanks to Ms Hadley down the street there and her strong lobbying. She really gets into the spirit I tells ya.

Did I tell ya about , just last year, I was invited to join in on the Festival of Lights parade they have here in Phoenix every year about this time.? Yea, there I was marching down Central Ave at night with my Christmas Decoration all lit up. It was great! It was such a wonderous sight, that the woman folk were fainting. I guess the cowboy's horses didn't appreciate being up staged by me tho. They had their saddles and halters all lit up and what not but haa! The ole saguaro with all those colored little blikey lites, timed in spiralling up and down,,up and down,,brought out alot of oows and aaahs from the crowd. Heck, my council woman even had her picture taken with me after I won 1 st Runner Up. She was so amazed,She didn't know whether to smile or cry.Yea.. Az Public Service and their Palo Verde Atomic Energy float always gets the judges number one vote tho. I wish I had that kind of energy.

Ours usually go up in early-to-mid December and come down on or about Jan. 6th. It's just been last year and this year that I've ever bothered to put up outdoor ornaments, as I never had a balcony before. That stuff's easy to take down -- no ladders required. When we had a house, I did the tasteful Williamburg thing, with a single candle in each window that faced the street. Those are also not difficult to take down. (Anybody else sensing a theme here? )

This year, the 6th is a Tuesday. I drive Magickmaker back to school on the 4th and go back to work (after vacation) on the 5th, so I may decide to take it all down early, on Saturday. It'll definitely stay up through tomorrow, though.

I don't put up Xmas decorations at home, but am in charge of putting up the tree at my workplace. I'll leave the tree up until mid-January, out of respect for Ukrainian Christmas.

Well now theres a coincidence!,,That Ms Hadley down the street i was telling you about, her maiden name is Bhablattsva. Her parents came over from the Ukraine right after the turnip market crashed in '31, i think it was. You ought to see her Christmas Ornaments!,,Why , soon after she lost her husband,,yea, the doctor told him he had to walk 5 miles a day if he wanted to live for much longer. The next day he proclaimed, By Golly I'm going to do It!! Out the door he went. Haven't seen him since. Geez, he could be almost to the Ukraine by now. Anyway..like Aliantha said, Ms Hadley use to hang her ornaments in the front winders. One there and one over there. They were nice. But after she lost her husband, I told you about that , rite? ..she went out and got those plastic inflating ornament things. She displays them rite there in the front yard. What a site! On a good day traffic will be backed up half way around the block. Heck I vote for her Christmas Ornaments every year, thats how nice they are She votes for my Christmas Decoration. So i guess we have alot of respect for each other.

As of 9:30 this morning the outside of my house is free of decorations and the tree has been packed away. So much for Christmas 2008. :-)

My grandmother's kept our Christmas tree up for three years, never mind the other decorations that stay on the walls. Frickin' pack rat...and oh, it's a fake tree of course. Now a real one for three years would be nasty...

I'll be taking down the decorations today.

It's almost a relief to get back to normal.

Somebody in our old neighborhood used to leave their tree up, in their front window, year-round. I was always extremely grateful that we didn't live across the street from those folks.... At first I thought maybe they had somebody in the military and were waiting on them for Christmas. But after awhile I figured out they must just like it or something.

I think I'm gonna take ours down tomorrow. It's early for us, but I'd rather do it in daylight, and I don't want to wait 'til the 10th....
