Last.fm

Post by benzss »

Does anybody here have a last.fm account? I did a quick search and couldn't see any topic, so I thought I'd try to spread the word and/or get people sharing their profiles.

For those of you who don't know about last.fm: basically it's a combined internet radio station and statistics monster. You listen to music on your pc and the artist and title are 'scrobbled' (i.e. sent to last.fm) and recorded on your profile. After a short time, it all gets nicely arranged into charts, by artist, album, genre, title etc, for you to peruse at your leisure. The best part is that it takes your taste and gives you pretty accurate recommendations. Apart from recs from friends, I've listened to more new music on last.fm than anywhere else.

So yeah... if you have a profile, let's see your charts! If not, sign up and get listening.

I love that place! I can go there and listen to stuff I haven't heard in years. Well, three times, anyway. But if I log out, I can hear them three more times. And if I'm listening from various wifi locations, three times at each of those too.

I listen to the radio more than anything. I'll plug in a band name that I like and hear all the (supposedly) related stuff I may not be aware of. Discovered some gems that way.

Hmm. Your musical compatability with benzs_s is medium.

Thought it would be higher than that. We have the Police, Santana, the Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and the Clash in common.

I see that you've most recently listened to The Offspring. I don't know why that's not listed in our compatability, they're one of my favorite bands. Spiritual heirs to Oingo Boingo. I must not have added them to my faves yet. I must see to that oversight.

I have created a Kevin's Watch group for any who wish to join.

I've used last.fm for streams of songs when I do searches for a tune in particular, but have not set up an account. Perhaps I should think of doing so.

What's the difference between this and pandora?

I'm not familiar with Pandora, Menolly, so I have no idea.

As far as I know (because Pandora isn't available to UK users) pandora is simply internet radio and doesn't have the 'statistics monster'... which is probably the most unique and, imo, best thing about last.fm.

I'm Old School (backward) so I don't have scads of music DLed to my computer and my WMP isn't linked to Last.fm, so all my "listens" have been listened to there.

A buddy of mine has over 100,000 listens, and some of my other friends are in the 10s of thousands.

Yeah i got past 100k last month. last.fm should give out prizes for being that dedicated to ... sitting around listening to music over a period of years.

ok maybe not.

heh. Yeah, the internet is quite a sinkhole, within which, vast spans of time can be squandered... I mean, invested.
