Fatal Revenant: Those 100 Questions

Post by wayfriend »

I've split this into another thread to keep the Runes spoilers out of the original thread.

Here is my take at which of those 100 questions were answered.

Dissect. Add. Answer. Enjoy.

The Answered (38)

Prologue
3. What does Roger refer to when he speaks of Joan “bearing it”?
A: I presume now this refers to being tormented by a Raver so much that she pounds her head and creates caesures.
4. Why can Roger so influence Joan’s condition?
A: He's working for Foul.
7. Is Roger possessed by a Raver?
A: No, it appears not. He's as bad as he seems. He's fallen for Foul in the hope of gaining immortality.
9. What is the significance of Jeremiah’s construction ability?
A: It is a reflection of his powers in the Land.
12. Has Jeremiah been to or seen the Land prior to his summons?
A: Yes. He's been in some way to the Land, many times, in many ages.
13. How did Roger know so much about Jeremiah?
A: He's working for Foul.
24. Has the nature of summoning or of reality itself altered significantly?
A: Yes. Roger, Jeremiah and Joan have all been to the Land somehow, long before Linden was summoned.

Part One
31. Had Joan been to or seen the Land prior to her summons?
A: Yes, it appears likely, as Jeremiah definitely has.
33. Why is Roger in the Land?
A: He's working for Foul.
35. Whom does “Tell her that I have her son” refer to?
A: Foul has Linden's son Jeremiah; he also has Joan's son Roger.
46. What gave rise to Kevin’s Dirt?
A: It was concocted by Esmer, Kastenessen, and Foul and/or a Raver.
48. What are the skurj, and what are they after?
A: They are, as thought, beings which Kastenessen had been Appointed to contain, but which he has set free and now controls.
52. What are the Elohim trying to warn the people of the Land about?
A: A plot by Foul, Ravers, Kastenessen, Esmer, Roger, and a croyel to destroy the Earth.
53. What are the croyel doing?
A: Enslaving Jeremiah and doing Foul's bidding.
54. How did Kastenessen get free, and what is he after?
A: By becoming skurjish; he desires to destroy the world out of petulance.
56. Which Half-Hand do the Elohim warn people against?
A: Probably Roger. But this could be wrong.
58. What forces have been “set in motion which will shatter the Arch of Time”?
A: One, at least, is a bid to get Linden to rouse the Worm by resurrecting Covenant with wild magic, the Staff of Law, and the krill.
64. Why does someone “command” Anele not to speak of Kastenessen, Durance, skurj, and Elohim?
A: So he will not reveals what he knows of their plotting.
65. Why does Covenant ask Linden to “find me”?
A: He wants her to meet him in Andelain, and not be fooled by Roger.
66. Who is the fiery being that can possess Anele?
A: Kastenessen.
67. Who is/are Esmer’s master(s), and what are they after?
A: Kastenessen, and Foul.
69. What Elohim guidance did Linden spurn which will cause much to be lost?
A: Taking the ring when they told her to, and being dissuaded from creating the Staff of Law.

Part Two
71. Why does Esmer help Linden travel through time to retrieve the Staff?
A: Its part of the plot-line which ends with Linden rousing the Worm by resurrecting Covenant.
72. Whose malice caused the storm while Esmer was away summoning a ceasure?
A: Kastenessen, probably.
73. Why does Covenant say, “Just be wary of me. Remember that I’m dead.”
A: Because Roger has taken on Covenant's appearance to trick her.
80. How is it that Esmer can “block” access to the wild magic?
A: His nature makes him antithetical to alloys.
81. How is the new Staff of Law different from the original?
A: It had no runes; it was not informed with lore.
83. What are the Demondim after?
A: They are part of a plot to let Roger sneak in as Covenant.
84. What is Esmer’s relationship with the Demondim?
A: He merely used them to advance Foul's machinizations.
85. What is the fiery possessor’s relationship with the Demondim?
A: He is Kastenessen, and he is working alongside Esmer.
89. Does health-sense, or a lack of it, really explain the can/cannot of Linden’s ring?
A: Some. Esmer can also block it. And the Staff is antithetical to using it.
91. Whom does the stone know “betrayed” Covenant?
A: Roger, Covenant's son.
92. Who is the Mahdoubt, and what is she after?
A: She is an Insequent, and she is here to help.
94. Why is “Find” emphasized in the title of the last chapter?
A: Because that is not Covenant approaching.
95. What “peril and pain” await Linden?
A: A plot by Roger, posing as Covenant, and Jeremiah, possessed by a croyel, to obtain the Power of Command.
96. Why must Linden “be cautious of Love”?
A: Because that is not Covenant approaching.
97. Is that really Covenant riding up to Revelstone?
A: No.
98. Is that really Jeremiah riding up to Revelstone?
A: Yes, but he is enslaved by an invisible croyel.
99. Why do the Haruchai call Covenant a stranger?
A: Probably they got a hint that it was really Roger; they seemed to have unconvinced themselves of it quickly.
100. Why is Jeremiah “excited” as he rides up to Revelstone?
A: He is enslaved by a croyel and is participating in a charade.

According to Lytton...
"She asked me why [she had to ride in the back of the squad car]. She was f###ing hysterical about it. So I told her."
"Told her --?"
"The truth, Dr. Avery. Her ex was a f###ing leper. And she was married to him before she knew he had it. She probably had it herself. Hell, she probably still does. If nothing else, she's a damn carrier.
"I made here ride in the back because I idin't want to be infected."

Assuming there's nothing more Lytton is going to reveal, that seems to answer #14.
Covenant turned in time to see a short figure detach itself from the burning mud, step queasily onto the hard ground.

The figure was scarcely taller than the skest, and shaped like them, a misborn child without eyes or any other features. But it was made of mud. Flames flickered over it as it climbed from the fire, then died away, leaving a dull brown creature like a sculpture poorly wrought in clay. Reddish pockets embedded in its form glowed dully.

It might very well be.

But then again, if Lytton did do something which, afterwards, would look bad, is he the kind of person who would admit it? A man who has revealed his baser nature, and that he is driven by fear?

We know he changed the subject before finishing his recital of events.

IIR, this question arises because it seems like Joan was fine when she entered the car, and she was firmly into her mentally disconnected state when she emerged at the other end.

Occam's Razor suggests Lytton had something to do with it.

(Discussion of this was in the dissection of prologue chapter 4.)

Ok, my bad for posting in the wrong spot. I'm reading Runes again and read that section not too long ago, so it was fresh on my mind.

On the q/a pair

Q: Why is Roger (insert shitty thing here)?
A: Because he works for LF

I predict that he will turn out to be one of those that Esmer was referring to in saying "that which is evil need not have started out so, nor need it always remain so" (or whatever the quote was - don't have the book in front of me.

68. How did the Haruchai unleash “endless havoc” by fathering Esmer?

Simple answer: They obeyed/respected LA and the land as a whole. The mere-wives DON'T

Rationalization: Just after LA has bathed in Glimmermere (FR), she calls Esmer to account for his actions, his balance start to fray toward havoc.
Rough Quote
LA If you don't insist on committing harm you wouldn't be in this trouble.
Esmer If I didn't insist on helping you, I wouldn't be driven to commit harm.

25. Why did the old man not appear to Linden?

He only appeared to TC once remember. The appearance seems to be a test as well as a warning of what is to come. Also remember what he said to TC at the end of the of TPTP, that the risked much by speaking to TC at all. the more he interferes with the people from the real world, the more he risks violating the arch of time.

Are you saying that it was Foul's plan to have Joan doing what Roger is now doing? And that something went wrong, such that Joan could not do it?
