10 Best Picture Nominees

The news came out a while back, but for those of you who don't know and actually care a bit, the Academy Awards has decided that they are going to have ten Best Picture Nominees instead of the usual five.

It is well known that movies that pick up a nomination pick up a bit at the box office due to the nomination. Is this just to keep people going into the theater or to include audience popular movies like The Dark Knight that didn't receive a nomination this last year, like they claim it is?

Personally, I think the bump at the box office that a lot of the artier films will suffer. Hell, for those of us on a budget, we can't afford to go see all ten, and five sometimes is just hard to find the time to see, especially when they tend to run well over 2 hours these days. And some of us don't have the heart to sit through 8 or 9 depressing movies, as those are the ones winning awards anymore. I used to always see the Best Picture nominated movies, but I've found in the last few years I am unable to as it is winter and the lack of sun makes me depressed enough already. Through in a human atrocity nazi war movie and two or three movies about a guy losing a girl to some disease and some movie on the non-joy of aging, and I don't really want to go back to the theater for a while.

It might make the awards a bit more exciting though, but overall, I'd say it kinda sucks.

I agree. They can't really do much else though...
Four out of the five are usually dramas, so a separate category named Other wouldn't work. Personally I think the comedy Golden Globe Best Picture award is kind of lame as I've never seen a modern comedy that really can compete with the usual Best Picture dramas and epics.

I'd go with eight nominees if I were them, one in each of the six major categories: drama, action/adventure, mystery/suspense, romance/comedy, foreign, animated plus two others that are the best of the rest (and probably dramas nine times out of ten). The romance/comedy would never win but at least deserves a mention and the rest tend to have a chance here and there.
