Julie & Julia

Post by Menolly »

Is anyone else planning on seeing this?

I'll probably wait for the DVD, but this promotional video with Meryl Streep does make me hopeful that it will be a good one.

For a last-gasp-of-summer outing before my wife had to go back to working in the school system, we went to see Julie & Julia yesterday. Definitely worth seeing, IMHO.

First of all, the food scenes, both cooking and eating, are superbly done. If you have any foodie tendencies (and if you are reading Galley threads, one assumes you do have such tendencies), you will love this movie.

Julia Child, of course, is an icon in the food world -- and Meryl Streep's portrayal is pitch-perfect. There are those who believe she has been over-acting in recent years...but the role of Julia rather needs that. Streep has the voice, mannerisms and joie de vivre of Julia nailed. Stanley Tucci is also very good as her husband, and the strength and joy of their marriage is as clear as the beauty of the food.

Julie Powell, the other half of the title pair, is played by Amy Adams. Julie is a blogger who decides to take on preparing every one of the 500+ recipies in Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking within the span of a year. In real life, many foodies have a low opinion of Julie (and the movie acknowleges that Julia herself was not a fan of Julie's writing or her approach to cooking), but Amy Adams is adorable as always and most of Julie's rough edges are glossed over in Adams' portrayal of her.

For fans of the TV drama 24, you will be interested to see Mary Lynn Rajskub in a different role than computer geek Chloe O'Brian, although she's still playing someone almost as socially awkward as Chloe.

Thanks for the review Savor. I'll put that one on my list (very very short list) of movies to see! I've just noticed that it takes a little longer to make its way down under, but current release date is October 8 (that should give us a month to organise baby-sitters....) :D

Saw this on the weekend, and agree with your review Savor Dam. In particular, I loved Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci. Nothing replaces cooking with butter (which I agree with)!

Glad you got to see it, Stevie...and a few days earlier than you anticipated its release.

Now to get it released on DVD so our forum mod can get to see the movie on that wonderous big screen that has recently graced her home.

Stevie was mildly gushing about it to me privately last night.
I am still really looking forward to seeing it.
