great musical moments

Post by Fist and Faith »

I saw Angel Eyes (a J-LO movie) some months ago. My jaw dropped at the scene where the guy just walks up to the stage, picks up somebody's trumpet, and starts playing this beautiful, haunting melody. A flute player joins him, and it's just incredible.

The movie was just on tv, and it made me think of other favorite musical moments of mine from non-musicals.

Shreck, when Fiona's preparing to marry the prince, even though she & Shreck love each other. I guess the song we hear is called Hallelulia.

Road to Perdition, when Hanks & Newman are at the piano.

In an episode of Angel, one bad guy makes his final appearance on the show, and sings in the bar. Just him and a guitar. I don't remember the song at all, but it was awesome. Cordelia says something like, "I know you're evil and all, but that was amazing." heh

Anybody got favorites?

The opera scene in Philedelphia...it always takes my breath away...

"Look..Look..
the place that cradled me is burning...

Live still, I am life
I am divine
I am oblivion
I am the God that comes down
from the heavens to the earth,
and makes of the earth a heaven.

I am love
I am life..."

Brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. That is one of my favorite movies...
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

There is also this. The end of the West Wing episode "The Two Cathedrals".

Dire Straits

Brothers in Arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

As the president is going to the press conference to answer questions about his MS and...whether he will run for a second term, this plays in the background. Absolutely incredible!!!

This is also the episode where he has that awesome scene in the Cathedral, after Mrs. Lenningham's funeral, cursing God. Incredible acting, incredible writing.

No wonder this series has won so many Emmys for best drama...it truly is the best.
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

At The Start Of "The Year My Voice Broke", "The Lark Ascending" is playing. Haunting.

Also in the same movie : Tower Of Strength at the dance, and Noah Taylor singing The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, in two different scenes, both all-powerful!

I haven't seen that movie danlo, but I love Sinatra :)

I also loved the music being played in the background in "Sleepless in Seattle", "When Harry Met Sally", and "You've got Mail". All those "croonie" type songs... "Bye Bye Blackbeard", "Let's call the whole thing off"...etc. Good stuff that. :)

Can't help you, Landwaster. Never saw that movie.

Yeah Fire, pretty fantastic episode!!! There have been incredible moments and scenes in other episodes, and great episodes. But as far as full episodes goes, that's probably it. Seeing the beginnings of their relationship, so many years ago, was genius.

Seeing him light up and put the cigarette out in the church was shocking! As strong a believer as he's always been... *whew* I'm sure he goes back to his old self after the grief lessens, but man!!

And yes, Brothers in Arms was niiiiiiice! :)

Wasn't that the COOLEST!! It took my breath away when he turns in the Cathedral and says..."You are a son of a bitch, you know that?" I went. "WHOA!!!"

"What was Josh Lymon? A warning shot? He was my son, what did I ever do to yours..."

and then, at the end, putting his hands in his pockets and smiling when asked if he will be running again...

Leo: "Watch this."

It's the best.

Yeah, I loved seeing his hands go into his pockets! :)

Leo is pretty cool too! Giving Toby the "lifeboat" just to show Bartlett that Toby wouldn't take it! :)

(You know, I started a West Wing thread a while ago. LOL)

Salieri "staring through the bars at an absolute beauty" as he reads Mozart's sheet music in "Amadeus".

One of my Top Ten Lifetime Best Movies. That whole scene is a treasure of balance between down-to-earth comedy, lust and ethereal wonder.

Good one, Joy! :) Definitely one of my favorite movies too! Mozart asks him if he believes in damnation and all that, and I LOVE the way Salieri says, "Oh yes."
