Hoarders

Post by lorin »

This show is absolutely riveting and very very sad. I think everyone tries to control their environments and for these people that need to control has gone awry. Especially scary is Jill, a food hoarder.

Their illness and their situations seem completely insurmountable.

I saw a commercial for it, but have not seen it. My first though was that this is Clean House taken to the next level.

My second thought is, at what point do we admit we're entertaining ourselves with the misery of others?

A valid question. I can only speak for myself. Since I am in social services it fascinates me to look at the process of recovery. The behavior of hoarding is very similar to other addictions, and as I mentioned above, it is in my opinion an issue of controlling our environments. Yes, there is a voyeuristic element to watching a show like this, or any show that intrudes on the privacy of an individual, but without the theraputic aspect of the show it would hold no interest for me.
