Best Song in a film

Post by stonemaybe »

I did a search and didn't find a topic, so....

We're not talking complete soundtracks here, just best use of a song in a film, or top five/ten perhaps.

Mine would be

Burning Bridges in Kelly's Heroes
Self-Preservation Society in The Italian Job
Iggy Pop's Lust For Life in Trainspotting
King Herod's Song in Jesus Christ Superstar
The Pixies' Where Is My Mind in Fight Club
Soggy Bottom Boys' I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow in Oh Brother Where Art Thou
The Byrds' Turn! Turn! Turn! in Forrest Gump
The Beatles' Nowhere Man in Yellow Submarine
Big Country's Restless Natives in Restless Natives
Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild in Easy Rider

Damien Rice's Blower's Daughter in Closer.

Edit: It was in (I think) the opening scene:

But my first link is the full song.

Cat People In Inglorious Basterds. It actually got a laugh out of me. Charmingly anachronistic, but it *worked*

Oh, definitely "Where is My Mind" from Fight Club!

I'd also say "Hey" by The Pixies in Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Gawd I love that song.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen in Wayne's World

Also, the Requiem for a Dream soundtrack with Kronos Quartet's repetition of that haunting theme

"Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealer's Wheel on the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack.

I also thought the beginning of The Watchmen did well to use Bob Dylan's song, "The Times They Are A Changin", though I never saw the end.

oh! AND "Hey Jude" in The Royal Tenenbaums. I loved the way they used it:

AND and "Needle in the Hay" by Elliot Smith in the same film

Wow.
I've only know one other person who's even heard of that great song.
Volcano is also good from his own album.
I have yet to see the movie though.
Any good?

The movie is pretty awesome in a dark, weird way. :)

I'm also a fan of Damien Rice. Good stuff.

Yeah, I bought Rice's cd because of The Blower's Daughter, and like the rest of it pretty well. Aime in particular.

This Woman's Work by Kate Bush in She's Having A Baby
Innocent When You Dream by Tom Waits in Smoke
And embarrasingly,
I'd Rather Be A Wanderer from Knightriders

Those are the films that a song really made a scene in a movie for me that I can think of right off the top of my head. As for movies that are definitely enhanced overall by their soundtrack, which set the proper tone overall through music, but weren't exactly created for the movie:

Garden State
The Graduate (actually, was the soundtrack created for the film, or just the song Mrs. Robinson?)
The majority of Wes Anderson movies

a few that spring to mind, are:

Audrey Hepburn singing Moonriver the only reason to watch Breakfast at Tiffanys

Lou Christie's, Lightnin' Strikes Again - in the movie, Strange Behaviour

Tito & Tarantula, After Dark - From Dusk Till Dawn

and...
Eric Idle conning Mrs. Scum out of her liver with the (very educational!) Galaxy Song in the film The Meaning of Life

Some great picks, but just to be different, I'd switch a few.

Lust for Life to Perfect Day. After the Flesh to STP's Big Empty. Underground by Tom Waits in *ugh* Robots.

I'd throw in:

Breath by Pearl Jam in Singles.
Tiny Rubberband by the Butthole Surfers and Moby in the Spawn soundtrack (or just about anything else from that one)
Nine Inch Nail's Perfect Drug from Lost Highway.
And, finally, What the Hell Have I by Alice in Chains from The Last Action Hero.

<edit> Can't believe I forgot Bad Religion's Leaders and Followers from Clerks.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

I couldn't choose between these two songs. They're only a couple of mins each:

Cheech

'n'

Chong

Chong looks really familiar I'm sure I've seen him somewhere before???
