Can we have the Sandgorgon's name censored?

Post by Landwaster »

This is both serious AND tongue-in-cheek.

We all know from the series how suicidal it is to recite the name of a Sandgorgon. Why do we allow it here on the boards? There's got to be a simple filtering process available we can use to have it deleted or replaced with 'the Sandgorgon of whom we cannot speak his name' or some such.

Wouldn't it also be in keeping with getting truly more involved in the fantasy for Kevins Watch messageboard to pay due respect to the dangers of an action as shown in the chronicles?

Gotta be careful with this type of thinking. If you forbid anyone to say NOM, what's next? Can I post "I am now drinking EarthBlood" despite the incredible danger of unforseeable consequences? And if I do that, can I say, "I Command NOM to fight the Despiser."? And would NOM first have to try to kill me, for having spoken his name, before moving on to Foul? I mean, which is the stronger compulsion, the one to obey the Power of Command, or the one to kill whoever speaks his name?

Sure does make you think, doesn't it?

:LOLS:

Hey, if you're afraid of NOM, just don't say "NOM."

Sometimes even I can't tell. :)

I suppose it would be funny if, every time someone typed the name, it came out like this:

N-M 8O

I really do wish you people would stop tossing around that Sandgorgon's name. Funny things happen to my computer when it's called... :?
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

I can say with a fair amount of certainty that there is a way to censor the word, but I'm not sure how replacing it would go.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Remember that the people of the Land tried to censor "bad thoughts" through the Oath of Peace and ended up crippling their own spirits. This could happen to us too if we refuse to face the possible dangers of knowing the name.

Oh yeah? So complete this sentence for me : "Do not {insert your words here} when stating the name of a Sandgorgon is enough."

Simple:

Do not break the Arch of Time when stating the name of a Sandgorgon is enough.

By the way, I NOMinate this thread as the silliest thing on Kevin's Watch. The Sandgorgon's NOM de guerre is not just an aNOMaly, it's an integral part of SRD's NOMenclature. If you would-be tinpot censors keep inflicting your aNOMie on me, I may just have to get antiNOMian on your heinie.

(Seriously, I hate auto-censors and filters and that kind of rubbish. I once had a friend who couldn't log into a then-major message board because (a) no handles were allowed, real names only, and (b) it thought his real name was obscene and wouldn't let him use it. His name? Reed Ball.)

(I guess they didn't spend much time on that board discussing footCENSORED, baseCENSORED, or basketCENSORED. Or I Love Lucy, starring that past master of physical comedy, Lucille CENSORED.)
