of making people hate characters in his books...

hes created alot of characters that are just despicable, and has made several of them pretty big characters...covenant was a jerk, angus thermopyle was a scumbag, and that...guy...from mordants need was a lecherous pervert....granted this is the series where that kind of guy WASNT the main character...or one of the heroes, but still...

and all the series' that ive read all have instances of rape...

just somethin ive noticed...

Um, you might want to be a little more specific as to what that topic is about.

I actually never really hated any of the characters, well not any that are the "good guys" the bad guys pissed me off though, most notably, the kemper. I hated that guy. Foul never really bothered me. And I never hated Covenant, a bit frustrated because he wouldnt take action or was being stubborn, but never hated him. Even after the controversial rape, I didnt hate him. And personally I don't see what the big deal is with it in the first place, I know rape is wrong, in fact, I really really hate the concept, but I don't see what is so hard to understand about why he did it. He really thought it was a dream. And...okay well I'm really too tired to talk about this now. It's late. But long story short.

1. Doctors pounded into him the fact that numbness was a part of his life, impotence and lack of feeling were IMPOSSIBLE to make go away. Or in other words, he'd never feel his fingers and toes and all that again. EVER. EVER AGAIN. That is a key point. And any contradiction, if he ever waivered from that belief meant death, due to his inattention to leprosy and the resulting gangrene and decay and all that.

2. He does feel again. This is totally contradictory to what has become the most important part of his existence. Therefore he has two options. Accept it and basically die. Or believe it's a dream and believe in his leprosy and live.

That's really it.

Now I'm not sure myself why I typed all that. It's probably because I'm tired. And because the despiser said that alot of people hated Donaldsons characters. I assumed he meant Covenant and primarily because of the rape and all that.

A facet of the story that I think many people don't take the time to consider.

They see rape, and are repulsed, I fully agree with the reaction, anyone that isn't I'd have questions about. But they should also simultaniously ask themselves why it's happening.

Oh well. I'm going to bed. Goodnight Guys. Sleep Well.
And so on I walk the world,
a slave to this dark fiend,
traveling, traveling, held within a dream......

Yeah he gives us characters, gives us every reason to crack it with them, and then allows us to work through it as further info arises.
Do you think I like being this dangerous?

No folks, there is no denying it. TC is one of the greatest a******* in fantasy. Paradoxically this is one of his greatest strengths.

I never really HATED the characters in SRD's books...not even Angus. In fact, I LIKED the evil bastard, but then I always root for the hopelessly screwed up characters. Unless they're stupid. I may be mixing up the idea of who I hate reading about and who I actually hate, because there are certainly plenty of hateworthy characters in SRD's books. I love reading about just about all of SRD's characters, there are never really any boring people to read about, unlike SOME authors I could mention (Robert Jordan). I suppose the characters I would hate if they weren't so damn entertaining would be:

1. Foul after he totally screwed over the Land in the second chronicles, making it not even resemble the Land as it once was.
2. Nick Succorso...just about all the time
3. Milos Taverner...every time he does...stuff...to Angus

SRD has a particular knack for presenting you with a character who is, on first appearances, a monster, but then allowing you to glimpse into their past to see what made them the way they are.

That's how he managed to make even someone as warped as Marc Vestabule seem a character that you could, at some level, associate with. That and he kept saying "invested with decisiveness", which is a damn cool way of saying that you're in charge.

Yes it is Donaldson's way to make irritating and flawed characters.
But the chance for redemption is the underlying theme of the book I would argue.
Hile Troy (widely regarded as a berk lol) redeems himself. Covenant obviously, even that arrogant bastard Findail and of course the enigma Vain. The most characterless character with character I have ever seen created in fantasy/sci-fi history. Although the Shrike in the Hyperion novels is also a classic enigma.

After re-reading the chronicles many times I find Covenant to be less annoying in the first chronicles then I remember on first read. A generally accepted view amongst fans of course.
Maybe its the Bannor and foamfollower factor in the first that moderates my feelings towards him. At times in the second chronicles he can be absolutely pathetic in his remorse for his actions where in the first he is remorseful for not doing anything.

He is basically a pretty annoying bastard but hey thats why he is fantasy's most interesting character.

Never hated Angus, Nick, or Foul. But Milos Traverner *shakes with rage* hate the slimly c**t. What I would give to stab the fat bastard.
