Subliminal messages in the songs of the Land?

Post by Reisheiruhime »

Well, it's a possibility. Maybe. I mean, how did the songs do what they did? Without something, they're just words. Tone, pitch, volume?

Well, just a thought.

Are you saying that if they were played backwards at a slower pace there'll be a message about following Lord Foul? :)
Do you think I like being this dangerous?

I have a friend who's kind of a wacko. Well, ok, he's totally off his nut. But in a benign way. Among other things, he's into conspiracy theories and some kind of bizarre Holy Grail cult. Something to do with the bloodline of Christ, dragons, lizard people, and menstrual blood. Sounds scarier than it is. In practice, he just reads a lot of books, (the bible prominent among them) does wierd research on the sumerian tongue and the dead sea scrolls, and generally grows his hair and beard real long and looks fanatical.

Anyway, one of the things he talks about sometimes (this goes along with some of the conspiracy theories - see the government and the catholic church use these tones in advertizing and mass, respectively.) is the way certain tones affect our pshyches. (See, I am on topic. ;) ) According to nut-boy, certain musical tones cause specific reactions in our bodies. Some cause physical reactions, like nausea or lust, while others affect our more ephemeral selves. These can make us happy or sad, or open our minds - make us more susceptible to brain-washing. Some can even cause out-of body experiences. It's a combination of pitch and frequency I think. So it could be something like that, right? ;) ;)

Myself, I always chalked it up to the Land being a place where magic works. ;)

Sounds fascinating, but I can't exactly recall any song in the books whish are mentioned as having any special effect aside of being beautiful and moving. Could you be more specific what you have on your mind?
Music certainly works (also) the way you describe, but that applies to all sorts of music, methinks.

They do have subliminal messages, but not to the people of the land, but to us!

You see, TCTC is actually really rubbish, the most rubbish piece of cr*p ever written, but the songs in it mess with our subconsious, making us think that they are supremely amazing... :D

Hmm, maybe I misinterpreted her question. I thought she was asking about the songs of power sung by the Forestaal, Gravelingas, etc.

It's quite possible I was in my own little world. ;)

Just words? Just words????

"I love you" is just a few words, but if it comes from someone important in your life it has great meaning.

I read somewhere before that the true name of God is a power word. A word of such power that he doesn't let his people even know it.

"Melonkurian" is a power word.

Other words of power, put into a melody can have power, like Trell fixing the graveling pot with musical power to bind it together molecularly.

I also believe that cadences, rythyms, pitch, and tone helped to build the pyramids, when a whole different technology existed.

If colors can affect moods, why not words?

There is no need for the songs of the Land to have subliminal or even liminal messages. They boldly and unabashedly state their meaning. Subterfuge is unnecessary. Unless of course Foul slipped something into each song as it was being written so that with each singing the hidden message slowly ate away at the souls of the people of the Land and…

The most amazing description of a singer in Chrons and the way she did it, was in The Illearth War, wasn't it, where Hile and TC see her preform Kevin's Lament-and something else before that right? One voice singing as many, something like that. Damm wish was home and could find some quotes re: that. :(

Also in LFB, when Atarian sings The Legend of Berek Halfhand. She was said to sing with many voices at once.

As far as power goes. All of the Forestals' power came from their music. They sang rather then spoke. Their music trilled and moved with them. Wildwood moved Mhoram, Troy and the others thru Garrotting Deep by the power of his song. Caer-Caveral called the Healer to Covenant in Morinmoss thru his music, sent his "gleams" to the Colassus...etc. Their music was power. And very beautiful. I love the way SRD used music in this way.

Caer-Caveral in TWL...

"Andelain I hold and mold within my fragile spell,
While world's ruin ruins wood and wold. Sap and bough are grief and grim to me, engrievement fell,
And petals fall without relief.
Astricken by my power's dearth, I hold the glaive of Law against the Earth.

"Andelain I cherish dear within my mortal breast;
And faithful I withhold Despiser's wish. But faithless is my ache for dreams and slumbering and rest,
And burdens make my courage break.
The Sunbane mocks my best reply, And all about and in me beauties die.

"Andelain! I strive with need and loss, and ascertain
That the Despiser's might can rend and rive.
Each falter of my ancient heart is all the evil's gain;
And it appalls without relent. " I cannot spread my power more,
Though teary visions come of wail and gore.

"Oh, Andelain! forgive! for I am doomed to fail this war.
I cannot bear to see you die-and live, Foredoomed to bitterness and all the gray Despiser's lore.
But while I can I heed the call
Of green and tree; and for their worth, I hold the glaive of Law against the Earth."

Breath-taking...
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

That is my favourite song in the entire six books. Without a doubt.

You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.

He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.

I'm afraid there's no denying
I'm just a dandelion

I suppose, as long as they play nicely with each other.

My favorite song in the one that Pitchwife sings in WGW, that appears later in the book as well - I'm quoting this from memory, and I don't have WGW with me right now, perhaps one of the quote masters can help me out with the rest, or correct any misquoting:

My heart has rooms that sigh with dust
And ashes in the hearth
They must be blown away
By daylight's breath
But I cannot assay the task
For even dust to me is dear
For dust and ashes recall
My love was here

Ask and ye shall receive...it's also one of mine favorites too...

My heart has rooms that sigh with dust
and ashes in the hearth.
They must be cleaned and blown away
by daylight's breath.
But I cannot essay the task.
For even dust to me is dear
For ashes still recall,
My Love was here.

I know not how to say Farewell,
When Farewell is the word
That stays alone for me to say
Or will be heard.
But I cannot speak out that word
Or ever let my loved one go:
How can I bear it that these rooms
Are empty so?

I sit among the dust and hope
That dust will cover me.
I stir the ashes in the hearth,
Though cold they be.
I cannot bear to close the door,
To seal my loneliness away
While dust and ashes yet remain
Of my love's day.

:)
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.
