anyone going to see this? or seen it already?

i read the book when it came out. altho i like lehane's
detective series books (the kenzie-gennaro books) and
mystic river, shutter island wasn't as good to me.
BUT i think it might make a pretty good movie and
i haven't seen a scorsese film that i liked in a VERY
long time but the trailer looks pretty good.
i'll pretty much go to see anything with max von sydow
in it! :lol: and kingsley. and i have liked dicaprio since
gilbert grape, a boy's life, and the quick and the dead.

anyway, if you're seeing it, let us know how it is. i might go
sometime this week.

I'm going to try and see it this week . . . even though someone spoilt the twist for me. Actually, they didn't so much as spoil it - I remember seeing the trailer and thinking "wow, that looks like the most obvious twist in a mystery film in a long time" (I think I wrote something like that on this site too). Anyway, a friend saw it and then simply told me 'yeah, you were right'. That's quite a dissappointing feeling, even before having actually seen the movie. Nonetheless, as Scorcese hasn't done a pure thriller since Cape Fear, I still do want to see it.

yeah i remember thinking when i read the book that the "twist" could be seen coming a mile away or that it was a bit pedestrian in comparison to the buildup. but its been so long since i read it that i remember very little about it so thats all good.

I'd also like to see this movie, to make up for having missed The Departed.

A good plot twist is fun, but it's not critical to my enjoyment of a film. That's my way of saying I just don't have a mind for detecting story twists, heh.
More important to me is how well a movie stands up to repeated viewing (if it deserves a second viewing at all).

I think the last Scorcese flick I saw before the Departed was Casino 8O . I actually enjoyed the Departed though - this one looks interesting... might see if I can get to it while it's on the big screen...

Very good movie. Very atmospheric and noirish. The twist was nice but even if you figure it out there is another twist found in the last line of the movie that I've heard was not in the book. I'd be very interested in seeing it again! 8 out of 10!

Ebert did a very intelligent review of this in Friday's paper, gave it 3 and a half stars. For some reason I've never liked Ruffalo, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

We saw this last night. I accidentally spoiled it for myself when I looked online yesterday for reviews, but I think I would've seen the twist coming. I thought it was very good, and also very disturbing at times. I'm not a fan of Kingsley (well, other than Schindler's List,) but like Luci I do like Max von Sydow. I give it 4/5.

i didn't get a chance to go this week as i'd hoped to. went back to work.
employment has its downside, not as much time to fart around and go to movies! grrrr.

i could watch this on graboid but i sort think it looks like a must see in theater type movie. whadda you think dlb? should i go ahead and watch it on graboid on my 22 in monitor or should i go to theater?

Saw this last night and in the end, enjoyed it. I must confess I was sort of waiting for it to turn into a horror movie as it unwound...but it didn't and the ending turned out to be great.

I must say Di Caprio is a fine actor, but the facial hair he sports in his movies, presumably to cover up his boyish looks, tends to have the opposite effect in that he can't grow "adult grade" facial hair and so looks like an untidy adolescent rather than a tidy one. But he does workhard at his craft and his subtlties are often lost or glossed over too quickly.

Good casting of Kingsley (IMO) as it sets you up with his more steroetypically bad guy (which he's played a good bit of of late) to expect a similar type of character and thus sets your expectations, this was also particularly well set up with von Sydow adding an even more sinister shadow to Kingsley's perceived role.
