Top 5 Films
Accuse me of making lists--go ahead; you'd be right. I love me the annual (or bi-annual, perhaps) top five, whether it be music, films, books, etc. So. What films dance among the stars in your vision?
1) Ran (from the score, the stark, haunting shots of muted violence, luxurious colors, the general improvement over King Lear [in my estimation] I don't think you can grip further in pathos and drama than Ran)
2) Seven Samurai (my favorite for the longest time; unravels lovingly; is intense but beautiful, gritty, gripping; simple, brilliant plot, characters, colors, camera angles. Everything is astounding, and I never want it to end, but it always does...)
3) A Clockwork Orange (Watching A Clockwork Orange for the first time was like my first viewing of Star Wars and reading T.S. Eliot's Wasteland all rolled into one)
4) Oldboy (revenge doesn't get much better or disturbing; a prime portrait of rage in the main character and beyond excellent in terms of music, plotting, images, and most of all--the nostalgic, serene pace)
5) Whisper of the Heart (by the geniuses of Studio Ghibli; nostalgic beyond description; a perfect portrait of 1995 urban Japan)

In no particular order:
The Big Lebowski
Brazil
Videodrome
Hellraiser I and II (I got them uncut on a double DVD so I count them them as one film here)
Galactic Gigolo --> Click here for a review (and i really own and love that movie)
My top five part two would include
12 Monkeys
Naked Lunch
The Hudsucker Proxy
Nothing Lasts Forever (one of the most under-estimated movies ever)
eXistenZ
Basically it's all Coen brothers, David Cronenberg, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones.
[EDIT]

I blame the failures of the public school system for the last two posts.....I know the teachers were very supportive and encouraging and all that, and I know they said "there are no wrong answers; all we want is for you to try your best", but 5 is NOT 10, ans 5 is certainly NOT 12.

Ravenous is a highly under rated film, I wont promise that you wont be sorry that you watched, but if you are sorry it wont be because its a bad film.Kaydene wrote:Great choices!Mr. Broken wrote:This is a loose five off the top of my head , and Ill doubtless think of others 30 seconds after I post. "Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
the hyperbole is a beauty...for we are then allowed to say a little more than the truth...and language is more efficient when it goes beyond reality than when it stops short of it.
