Green Zone

Post by Kil Tyme »

Pretty good action flick with Matt Damon as an army Chief Warrent Officer in 2003 Iraq looking for WMDs. His not finding any starts some sort of conspiracy theory storyline where he starts to put clues togeather and get to the bottom of things. Reminicent of his Bourne flicks with lots of action, constant change of camera angles and rapid story development, which can make it sort of complicated unless you're pay lots of attention; ie, no bathroom breaks or you may miss something. There is much artistic freedom in some scenes, such as drinking beer (US does not allow booze drinking in either iraq or afgan), pool parties (I doubt you are going to see that in 2003 Baghdad's green zone), and while Damon's character is running around in the middle of the night he is missing his companies Muster/Roll call! Anyway, I don't buy any Iraqi war conspiracies, but I really liked the flick for the action and entertainment.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

True enough! I do believe in this particular conspiracy. Alas, I don't know anything specific. Can't argue it. I just assume the entire intelligence community of the USA wasn't incompetent. I doubt they investigated, and concluded there were WMDs. Isn't that what we were told?

Ha. No doubt; as the Avatar thread shows. I just wanted to endorse the entertainment value of the movie without promoting it as a source of truth in a very political topic. I love action flicks, which this certainly is.

Went last night. I thought it a good action flick too, but after seeing the Hurt Locker it really did look a bit rough around the edges. I guess part of the action 'feel' was achieved by the disjointed and jerky camera work and quick change perspectives, I am not a fan of this technique, but this movie did it better than most imo and it worked well in the mixed low light/night vision images.

I must say the degree of conspiracy was somewhat hammed up and too dumb even for my sense of how dark the Empire is. :P But if the top journalists are as dumb as portrayed, I guess you would have to avoid using joined up writing when making your point.

All in all tho' a good romp, but I wonder if Matt Damon is beoming type-cast with the Bourne-esque chatracter. I had considered him an actor with the capacity to play a variety of roles but he's becoming a bit Bruce Willis, John Wayne, etc in that we go to see the same character in doing the same (slightly different) shoot-em-up action movies. I like those movies but the characters tend to be cartoons, like John Rambo, John Mclean, John Chissum etc......... and they are all called John. I though Matt Damon capable of more, but its difficult to play method when there is an expectration of a Bourne anytime you hit the screen.

From what I heard KT the hotel/swimming pool scenes were actually right with the journos, civilians, etc., taking over the hotels post bombardment to use as HQ's. This was prior to the Journos becoming embedded.
