pimp your public transport

Post by sgt.null »

as some may know - i do not drive. never have. that is part of the reason i transfered to the prison in town.

well julie is at her mom's for a few days.

so i had a chance (for free!) to try the brand new Brazoria County public transit.

soon we wil have to pay - but they have good rates.

i was very impressed. a large route that seems to hit all the spots our poorer (and housebound - like me) citizens would need.

and green to boot.

i am excited about finally having some public transport here - as i relied on it back in New England.

so people - how is public transit where you live?

It's a local past time to bitch about the T, Boston's public transportation system, and often with good reason, but in many ways it's one of the best public transit systems in the country. We have an extensive subway and rapid transit that extends into the metropolitan area, tons of bus lines throughout the greater Boston area, and a Commuter Rail that goes all over the state. I live right on a bus line that goes to a rapid-transit station on the T across town and there is Commuter Rail all over the nearby towns. Despite annoyances (such as a badly laid-out connection system; for example: I live just north of the city; if I want to go west of the city, I need to go downtown and then shoot out in a total non-linear fashion; other annoyances include frequent breakdowns and a slightly disturbing number of crashes), I still love the T. It makes me feel connected to the whole metropolitan area; the people watching is fantastic; it takes you more or less anywhere for cheap; and driving in Boston sucks so it's a great service to have.

Cool question.

We have a good transport system here in Nottingham. The trams were up and running just a few years ago so they still glide and bounce as new, making them fun to ride off peak. There's also lots of new buses on the roads, with a ten minute waiting time on all main routes. Although quite expensive on a there and back again trip, it's really cheap as chips for buzzing around all day with the same two-way ticket.

As for a bike, Nottingham can get too hilly sometimes.
I used to live in Cambridge, East Anglia, and it was flat for miles and miles and miles. And the most cycle friendly town I've ever seen, (but then, I've never been to Oxford town.)
I had a job as a postman and the postie bikes were dynamite to ride.

The reason I mention this is that I had some birthday cards delivered on Friday - four months late! My birthday is January!

Good transport system, crap postal service.

Can't have everything, huh?

DC's transit system was state-of-the-art in the 1970s. Now, however, Metro is showing its age. Fares keep going up (the latest round of fare increases starts today) while facilities deteriorate. We just passed the one-year anniversary of a fatal crash on the Red Line which occurred when a crucial safety system failed -- a safety system which the National Transportation Safety Board had recommended replaced several years before. 8O And the federal government has *never* consented to subsidize the system, despite the fact that so much of the ridership consists of federal employees going to and from work.

And yet. I spent the last three years living in the exurbs and can testify that for all of our grousing about Metro, having a decent transit system beats the hell out of *not* having one.

People like to complain in Portland that the light rail system brings crime with it.

But the fact is, it's an awesome way to commute, and it saves a lot of people a lot of time. The bus system, on the other hand, is quite shoddy.

I've been biking to the transit center (6 miles) and riding the train to work for over a year now. Since the weather's getting nicer, though, I want to start biking all the way to work (15 miles).
