Freddy Mercury Biopic? with Sacha Baron Cohen?

Post by wayfriend »

I say 'yes'. Cohen is a talent.
Try this one: Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a film that’s being scripted by Peter Morgan for a 2011 production start. The untitled film will be financed by GK Films partners Graham King and Tim Headington, who'll produce in partnership with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal’s Tribeca Productions, and Queen Films. Morgan is already working on a script focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985. Queen’s performance is considered one of the rock's all-time great live concert appearances.

A rights package has been set that includes the band’s tunes, including Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions , Another One Bites The Dust and You’re My Best Friend. It is unclear whether Baron Cohen will sing—I’m told he can sing—or whether Mercury’s vocals will be used. Nobody sang like Mercury, so trying to replicate him would be a tall order. These decisions will be made as a director gets hired. ... [link]

I'd prefer to see a Frank Zappa movie, and have Sacha star in that, but a Queen movie's cool too.

I just heard about this half an hour ago.
I think the guy can pull off the character.
I wonder about the music...one of the things I liked best about the Door's flick was the fact that Val could do Morrison's singing in a convincing way.
Freddie is a much, much more challenging vocalist to match.
[though autotuner could cover for it, with the right voice coach and engineer...I'd prefer real, though.]

Sacha could do it. Did you hear him singing in Sweeney Todd? He can do high range very well!
They made a movie about the Germs not too long ago and the Germs actually got the actor who played Darby Crash to be their new singer... so maybe we'll be hearing some new Queen music soon, eh?

I don't know: the only note he sang in Freddie's register was pure falsetto, [and classic training style voice technique].
Now...did he do it because the music/style called for it [which it did]?
Or because that's the only way he could hit the note?
I don't know the answer. I hope he CAN do the vocals, cuz I'm pretty sure he can do the acting/physicality.

Well, most of what I sing in Freddie's range is in falsetto too, but I can pull off "Who wants to live forever" flawlessly, and can get nearly all of "Bohemian Rhapsody" without cracking up any notes. Oddly enough, although I do good falsetto, I can't get Freddie's falsetto right in "Under Pressure."
Also, I did hear that Sasha's vocals in Sweeney Todd were not done without some assistance from the editor.
In general, Freddie Mercury has one of the hardest voices to copy, but not as hard as most people think.

If I had a nickel for every two-bit singer who thought he sounded like Freddy Mercury........

That being said, I'd love to hear an mp3 of it; in this case, it would be nice to be proven wrong.

I'd be interested in seeing it, but I do hope they dub Freddie's voice.
