Best and Worst Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of 2010
I don't like this one as much as last year's, but probably because I haven't seen as many... or maybe because I just didn't like Kick-Ass or the new Harry Potter.

Funny, I only saw one of the 'best' (Toy Story 3), and three of the 'worst' (Iron Man 2, Book of Eli, and Tron), and loved all of them. Guess I'm not cut out to be a critic.

Toy Story 3 rocked, and I haven't seen Iron Man (either one), nor Eli or Tron II, but, I've heard they were all pretty close to awesome, if you knew what to measure them by.___ wrote:Funny, I only saw one of the 'best' (Toy Story 3), and three of the 'worst' (Iron Man 2, Book of Eli, and Tron), and loved all of them. I did think Deathly Hallows Pt 1 was the best Potter yet, split in half, there is none of the incomprehensible first 20 Minutes as in GoF through HBP, and the deaths in the beginning and the end are Heart wrenching, my two toughest to deal with deaths in the whole series
4-6 also left out alot of things that become important for this one, and this one does a decent job of recovering from that. Plus, the whole "camping" epsiode is far less drawn out then the book.

Inception was incredible, so for me it was the best movie of the year. Skyline was disappointing, as was Predators and Iron Man 2. Tron Legacy was not bad. A shame I missed Monsters.

I liked Inception, Scott Pilgrim rocked, Tron was good in a "Batman Begins" sort of way....the sequel should rock.
"Iron Man 2" was disappointing. I didn't love the first one either, but it was better than 2.

I didn't think Iron Man 2 was that bad. They're right that it was a little slow in the middle, and it did contain one of the dumbest moments in cinema, summarised by the line "Congratulations, you have created a new element". Other than that it was alright. Not as good as the first, though.
Is Toy Story 3 really better than 2? I'm so used to the pattern of good first film, great second film, mediocre/terrible third film that I'd be surprised.

Am I the only one who liked Toy Story 1 better than 2?
I absolutely loved the first film, but I barely remember the 2nd at all. Except that there was a Darth Vader ripoff, and a toy store full of Buzzes.
3 was great, though.

Same here. Toy Story 2 was good, not great. Three actually surprised me by how good it was.

I thought Inception, IM2, Eli, and Tron were all great. And I enjoyed Last Airbender a lot. Don't know what everybody's got against it. Yeah, an enemy could throw a rock at any of them as they're dancing to get ready to use power. But it's a cartoon. Whatever. Looked incredible. Nice job putting it all together into one movie.

It is a well-known fact that the people who know the least about movies are movie critics. Most movie critics try one of two tactics: they are either hipsters, and try to find the movies that were so independent that they opened in only three cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul, Phoenix, and Portland) or they are sycophants of the movie studios and rubber-stamp the box office successes.

The Tank is gone and now so am I.
Inception was visually impressive but doesn't (for me) stand up to repeated viewings.
Tron: Legacy is basically a remake, but I loved it because I'm a geek.
The Crazies and The Book of Eli were also pretty weak, but reasonably enjoyable for a couple of hours.
Honestly, I think some of the best sci-fi I've seen this year has been on Caprica and Fringe.

Toy Story 3 was easily the best of the year. A perfect movie. I was primed for tears by the time the opening sequence theme song stopped with an ominous echo, "... our friendship will never die ..." With that freeze-frame shift into the movie proper, we'd already seen enough to know exactly where this movie was going and the wallop of an emotional punch it was going to deliver. It gives me chills just thinking about it now. (Murrin: it was without a doubt the best of the three. Rigel: you're not alone, I liked 1 more than 2, though Jessie's "origin" song was very touching.)
Inception was the most creative and intelligent I've seen this year. But it didn't hold up on second viewing, and I'm pissed that my personal theory was wrong.
Tron wasn't bad. It could have been better, but it could have been *much* worse. (Horrim: this one was the sequel.
It should have already been rockin').
I couldn't finish Predators. Bo-ring. And I'm a fan of the original.
Lovely Bones was very disappointing. Peter Jackson is a one-trick pony, apparently (or three-trick, depending on how you count LOTR). Let's hope he redeems himself with The Hobbit.
Cail, BSG was the best s.f. I've seen this year. I watched it based on your recommendation and enjoyed it immensely. I was just blown away by the character-driven drama unfolding season after season. It actually pisses me off because I realized that The Gap could be made--and done right--if someone would just give it a chance. It could even work as a miniseries, if they can't do it as a movie. BSG has restored my faith in s.f. like no movie I've seen in many years.

I really enjoyed Lovely Bones, but Peter Jackson has done better, and is certainly no one-trick pony. Have you seen any of his pre-LOTR movies? His early splatter stuff is great fun if you like that kind of thing (I do), Braindead is probably the best of them. But Heavenly Creatures is an incredible movie, and I highly recommend it.
